Moto Hagio and Lesbians

I was reading this rather awesome paper-- "Beautiful, Borrowed, and Bent: 'Boys' Love' as Girl's Love in Shoujo Manga" by James Welker today. It's really an interesting read if you can get your hands on it. Basically he's claiming that early (and continuing) BL stuff is a) written to avoid the traditional role of 'woman' and b) is a stand-in for lesbians. I am not sure if I agree with him on all points, but it's fascinating. He uses Kaze to Ki no Uta and Toma no Shinzou for examples (<3 instant love there), and with those at least, I can see his points.

So anyway, as I was reading, I stumbled across a very funny quote. Apparently, when Moto Hagio was writing Toma she had written one all-girl version and one all-boy version. But she ended up publishing the boy one because she said that drawing two girls kissing was gross like natto. XD  Moto-sensei, I love you.

It's not that I don't like yuri-- quite the contrary. But thinking of the way she draws girls... I completely agree with her.

bl, research, yuri
