environment and apathy

I love using the public transportation system - I can read or write or work, just watch the scenery, maybe strike up a conversation with someone (although I noticed that it seems next to impossible to do that with a man without being suspected of wanting to chat him up).

But the human factor. Friday to Sunday loud mobs of young men (99% of the time) have become normal, and by loud I mean yelling at the top of their voice and possibly aided by a bullhorn, drum or boom box. The yelling is usually as obscene as possible and requests to simmer down are of course answered with getting even louder.

This is not a new problem, and it's getting progressively worse, but nothing is happening. I don't want to own a car; I like using trains and/or a bicycle. But this is probably what will drive me to abandon public transportation.

The apathy towards it, and towards other environmentally conscious stuff like basic sorting of household waste, is what gets to me. It's not only destructive but uselessly so; stealing something at least leaves you with a gain. It feels as if all enthusiasm is sucked up by voting people off the island or out of the big brother house.
