In The Garden - Topic 1 - LAST CHANCE IDOL

In the garden
At the center of this world
Within a palisade of mountain and sea, glacier and desert
The omphalos
The tree grows from the umbilicus
Laden with fruit whose seeds already sprout at the core

After the clay has been formed into man
And bone forged into woman
Following the becoming
Thereafter
He appears, foot weary and hand heavy
Crowned with moon and sun, wreathed in stars
The mantle of the harvest

Beneath the weighted boughs he lingers
He can smell the scaled flesh of the serpent
Sense the brush of wing and flame
The beginning of the beginning
Ripened in this place

He sees how the snake slithered from the belly of the world
The birth of death
He hears the wails of the woman grieving
The silence of the man stricken
The journey of countless multitudes
Staggering forward

He bends down and retrieves the corpus
Holds it up, the broken flesh, the swallowed meat
He thinks of the womb of the woman
The umbilical tie
The oceans within
The tether of life
Bitten through

There is time enough to rest awhile
Here
In the garden
