I've got internet in my room. However, in my eagerness to re-plug in my computer, I may have blown out all of the power outlets in my room. Not even the Irish appliances work. Also, AIM isn't up yet.... but it's a start!
A few more details about life: I'm living in Goldsmith, which is on the far end of campus next to all the new math and science buildings. I'm across the street from the sports centre, which is free for students. This morning I registered, so now I have my student ID. Tomorrow we have a postgrad orientation.
Two of my flatmates are already moved in. Alon is from Israel, getting his PhD in music, and (wahoo!) is Jewish. We're going to explore our synagogue options (there are THREE) this weekend. The other one is named Toyoki, and he's from Japan and is getting an MBA. Alon's English is really strong, but Toyoki's is not. He also sheds in the shower, causing the drain to clog. Why does this sound so familiar? Thankfully, there's another with a drain that's halfway quicker.
The downside to my room (apart from having no electricity at the moment) is that it looks out directly onto a construction site that's active from 9 to 5 -- and the windows are in no way sound- or heat-proof. Also, it looks out on Pearse Street, which is not the quietest street -- but I know I'll learn to sleep through it. Other than that... it's a lovely size, though the construction of the apartment is sterile and institutional. One hallway looks onto eight doors: four bedrooms, two WCs, a closet and a kitchen. Each bedroom has a keycard lock and the walls are gray. The kitchen/common room is small but livable.
I saw Diarmaid last night for Quiznos and a pint. He's got a Real Person Job making little tiny diamonds that they put in chisel tips and saw blades, but wants to go to school in the States next year.
I don't suppose there's too much else to say for now.
