ok. what is there to update?
Cinco de Mayo was fun. we had nachos and Coronas. Diarmaid came over, as did a whole bunch of girls. Eventually we went to a shindig at Emily's for a while -- population 2 French, 2 Irish, 20 Americans. Diarmaid continued to be amazed at the allowable limits of PDA for Americans (they're rather stricter than those here). I introduced Diarmaid to Diarmuid (who is Tracy's), which was amusing. Rehman and Emily are FINALLY going out! And he got in some soccer accident and tore a tendon, and can't use his foot at ALL. Seeing him try to get to the bathroom with his crutches while drunk was a piece of comedy. Then we headed home and slept in late. Ash and I made breakfast in the morning: omelettes, toast and scones-from-mix (too much baking soda, not enough sugar, hand-added raisins). Yum. Then Lauren painted my fingernails and Ashley did my toes. I have a French manicure with about 40 coats on my fingers, and pink on my toes.
Happy Belated Birthday to
murph_grrl, whose day was Saturday.
Saturday night I actually did some work, which is remarkable since I've been unable to do it for such a long time. I suppose the last-minuteness of my archaeology exam tomorrow has hit. Anyway, I've only got a third or less of the material I'm used to having to work with (one hour a week per class? come on!), so studying is a breeze. The essays are also progressing.
Ash and I went to spinning this morning. What an ass-kicking! I liked it, though; the 40 minutes went by faster than anything on my own on a bike. The instructor was adorable, too: shortish and Scottish. Ash and I are going to a body conditioning class tomorrow an hour after my exam.
Woke up with a really tense neck this morning and I don't know why. Maybe it'll go away after tomorrow, since the exam will be done. Not that this exam really matters, because the arch classes aren't even counting towards my anth major. (Ling, on the other hand, does.) This has been more like a semester off than a semester to study.
NY Times: 4 Proposals on Same-Sex Unions Compete for Favor of ColoradansBasically, there's a bill, called 1344, heading for the ballot that would allow same-sex "partners" benefits including adopting each other's children and making medical decisions.
There's one that's trying to get through in its opposition that wants to illegalize anything same sex that is "similar to marriage."
1344's advocates are trying to pass another bill declaring that the same-sex unions would not be "similar to marriage."
A fourth act would put a same-sex union ban into the Constitution.
The reason that all of these have the potential to make it to the ballot is that only 5% of the voting population needs to sign a petition to get it onto the ballot. Other states' minimum numbers are between 8 and 15%.
I'm voting for 1344 and praying that enough of the rest of my state does, as well. This is something I'm willing to fight for. I'll go canvassing over the summer. I'll do what I need to. Because love knows no gender, dammit.
It has, however, been nice to be away from this stuff for a semester. Granted, it's just not a question here, there's just no movement to legalize gay marriage... but man, a break from the War on Terror was wonderful.
When I come home
(for one thing, I will be at once both happier and sadder than I probably have been since high school graduation)
for two: I want to see all of these wordnerdy movies. Akeelah and the Bee, Wordplay, and of course Bee Season which I never got to see while I was in the country and it in theaters. I could definitely go for another go-round of Spellbound, too.
ALSO
in news of the squeakiest variety:
Fboard gave crew SIX THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS to match an anonymous donation towards a new men's four.
This means that we have more than $12,000 towards yet another new boat! How FANTASTIC is that?!?
ok, I'm off to write sentimental letters to all the crew seniors. Awwwwwwwwwww. Sarah will give them out at the banquet along with the photo collages and keychains.
NYT: article on housing though Craigslistjust thought
