The others had been--less than impressed--with your powers, right after the storm. Probably because right at first you'd only been able to find paths. It was only after you'd sat down on the roof and really thought about things that you figured out the rest of it. Knowing where everyone is all the time has its advantages, of course, chief among them never yelling for someone no longer in the Eight, but sometimes your brain gets kind of tired. You've learned to turn everything off, but they're all still a buzz at the back of your head whenever they move around. Because you're a reasonable kind of guy, unlike certain walking Osaka jokes with a short temper and a fast tsukkomi, when the headache goes from buzzing to throbbing, you get out, and you take a walk around town. Being surrounded by so many moving things distracts you, and you can re-settle to do some more work, or sleep, whatever the fight for the day is.
Today Karina and Maru are sparring in the middle of the dancefloor, so you can't go that way. Hina and Yoko are arguing in the back room they run poker tournaments out of--you don't need a power for that, you can hear them--and Subaru is on the back stairs. Ohkura is out, on patrol or a date or something. The trademark shimmering in your head that is his immunity to your tracking is nowhere in the layers of feedback blasting static into your ears. And Ryo is--well, Ryo's everywhere in your head, these days. You're already well on your way to the side window out of the stock room when you hear him breathing in the doorway, and you turn back to look at him. He smiles.
"Going somewhere?" he asks you, arms crossed over his chest. When he raises his head, you can see the dark line of a bruise on his throat, and it makes your heart thump, thump, thump in your chest despite the fact that his powers are carefully off. You haul your right leg back in, and twist to balance precariously on the windowsill, sneakers flat on the box you'd used to climb up.
"Out into the city," you say, "I'm kind of getting a headache."
Ryo crosses the threshold of the store room, and shoves his hands into the kangaroo pouch of his beaten-up yellow sweatshirt. He looks open when he says, not unkindly, "why don't you try drugs, first, or one of Subaru's fruity-ass teas?"
"I took aspirin," you say, "and Shibuyan's teas only help so much. Have to leave some for Hina, or Yokocho if he has a flash."
You can see the memory of Yoko's latest flash flit across Ryo's face in the wake of a blanch, and you slide forward until you can lean down between your knees to card your fingers through his hair. He leans into it, because he has to; you're both just too short for this angle, but you can't wait to touch him, not now. His cheeks are cool where they touch your palms, and he sighs bodily into the short scritch of your fingers along his scalp.
"Do you want to relax?" Ryo asks, eventually.
You pull away, slowly. "I told you, you can't use your powers on me for that any more," you say, a touch of severity to your tone because you still wake up to nightmares of the last time.
"Not--" he reddens, looking away, and finally his head turns back up. "Not like that. I can... I can use them to help you sleep. Grandma pheromones or some shit, Maru helped me."
You wonder what else Maru has helped him with, but you don't ask. Ever since they came back from busting that cultist they've been in their own world. "All right," you say, finally, because it's Ryo, and you trust Ryo, even if you really shouldn't.
You don't walk in the city that day, but you do fall asleep with Ryo's gentle hand stroking over your hair.
