So, the Off-Center proof came in today. Sure, it’s a little rough around the edges- there’s some typos, there are a few pictures missing- but you know what? It’s ours. There is nothing quite like holding a finished product in your hands and going, hey, we did this. All of those emails and edits and debates, all those horrifically long, redundant Media Board meetings- but we did it. We’ve written, edited, designed, and published a magazine. And now that we’ve started, there’ll be no stopping us. We’ll get bigger and better every issue. In fact, as Lillian pointed out, we’re gonna be so big, we’ll run out of copies of an issue and have to print more to satisfy the demand. We can do anything.
The Recorder is coming out tomorrow with an editorial about how much we don’t deserve to exist, much less spend the Media Board’s precious money on a release party. Never mind the fact that the Media Board has- get this- one hundred thirty THOUSAND dollars ($130,000) to spend each YEAR. And that it spends a little under a third of that money on the Recorder. Never mind the Recorder’s revenue. Never mind the fact that we never have, and never will, tell you to rape ugly women and cook your Jewish friends.
The effect of this was pretty bad for all of our (just elected) eboard. Here we are, working our hardest, running around to get pictures and covers and final edits at all hours of the night, on top of our classes and jobs and commitments to other groups- because all of us are in other, active clubs. This is our night; our magazine is real. And the Recorder pulls the rug out from under us.
What are we going to do about? Well, I can tell you what I want to do about it, but I think we’ll just write them a little note thanking them for the free advertising. That’ll incite them more than fighting back.
What will the Media Board do about it?
What, indeed.
