title: ATTACK OF THE ZOMBIE NINJAS (that was a joke)
note: I began writing this three years ago in my first year of university after we discussed Hurricane Katrina in my sociology class. Somehow I turned what I learned there into a zombie!fic. Anyhow, here is a snippet because I'll never work on the entire thing. However, I shall give you some background info first! :)

Here's a taste of how I plan fics:
  • a hurricane on the Kuni Island (Fire Country colony) leaves the people waiting in a flood of household and industrial chemicals, sewage, garbage and rotting human and animal corpses
  • people nonetheless went through these waters to scrounge for drinking water, food and medicine, and to get to higher ground
  • Kuni Island was formerly the home to a lab for weapons research; birthplace of the Soldier Pill, made of powerful nutrients and stimulants blahblahblah
  • the lab is sunken by the flood, allowing all the chemicals to mix with the water and infect the people who drink it out of desperation
  • daimyo requests Kakashi (Hokage) send a team of medics to assist with the relief efforts on Kuni Island
  • Kakashi sends a team consisting of Sakura, Karin, Kiba, Hana, and more; Naruto is sad that he cannot go, but stays behind anyway with Sasuke and Sai
  • when the bi-weekly reports stop coming, Kakashi grows suspicious and allows Naruto, Sasuke and Suigetsu to go visit Kuni to check on everyone and then immediately return

“I would advise you to refrain from turning into water while we’re here,” Sakura said, slanting Suigetsu a tired smile. They’d just arrived back Kuni Island’s small hospital, the place she and Karin had been inhabiting all this time. She and Karin began barricading the door rather mechanically, as if they’d had to do this many, many times. “From what we’ve gathered,” she continued, “whatever has infected these people is in the water.”

“So then it’s safe to breathe, right?” Naruto asked worriedly.

Karin nodded. “Yeah. So far, we’ve been surviving off the food and water that the daimyo sent.” She glanced outside the small window and shuddered. “We’re not sure whether or not the food is safe to eat here or what water isn’t infected and we’re not about to take any chances so...”

“You guys have been here for two months,” Sasuke pointed out. “Why didn’t you say anything to Kakashi? Your reports stopped coming four weeks ago. You had everyone worried.” He looked rather annoyed at his last statement and scowled.

Karin frowned at his lack of respect. “Yes, and we will make sure to apologize to the Hokage-sama when we return.” She glanced at Sakura, finding a grave expression on her face similar to her own.

“Why did the reports stop coming?” Suigetsu asked after a moment of silence.

“It’s just been the two of us,” Karin quietly admitted. “And we haven’t found any transportation off the island. Everything these people had was destroyed in the hurricane, and we were just dropped off by someone back at the coast. The person who usually comes to pick up and deliver our things to the Hokage-sama...”

“He’s dead,” Sakura concluded. She looked at the ground, glaring. “He arrived in the evening. I suppose he was running late, so he just ran straight through the forest. He’d been here before-during the day. Kiba and I showed him around. He knew where to go, just...” Sakura snorted wryly. “Well, he didn’t make it.”

Naruto gulped. “Are you sure?”

“Yes,” Karin mumbled, looking away.

Sasuke frowned suspiciously. “How can you be sure?”

Sakura’s expression hardened. “Because I killed him.”
