Sakura flashed her best no-worries-I’m-a-total-airhead-so-feel-free-to-take-advantage-of-me smile at the guy across from her. “So you’re a medic, huh?”
She’d gone to Shizune’s division in an effort to get away from Lee and Gai and their not so inspirational cheers about youth. And Kakashi, who was making her follow him like a dog. Really, he was acting as though she was about to run off and kill Naruto this time. Anyway, when he got called off to some meeting, Kakashi unofficially put her into Gai’s care so she ran off to the medical tents under the guise of going on a jog of youth.
As if.
She’d been looking for some minor training accidents, but found none. Instead, there was some ridiculously cute blond guy who seemed to be there for the same reason.
Naturally, she flirted.
“That’s right,” he replied. “Though I’m actually in the Sensor Company.” Sakura almost rolled her eyes at that. Like all the other men in the mass shinobi army who’d attempted to chat her up in the past week or so, he just had to drop in his abilities.
“Oh, wow,” Sakura gasped, making sure to look impressed (though not to say she wasn’t). “That’s really cool… uh…” She stopped when she realized she forgot his name.
Fuck.
He seemed to notice that since he smirked at her. “Shi.”
“I knew that.” Sakura coughed awkwardly and looked away to avoid his amused eyes. “I’m S-”
“Sakura-chan!”
Sakura stiffened. She recognized that deceptively cheerful voice. Trying not to scowl, she looked over her shoulder to the tent entrance and saw Kakashi. His visible eye was crinkled, indicating that fake smile he usually wore before telling Naruto he was an idiot.
“Crap,” she hissed under her breath. Sighing, she turned back to Shi. “Uh, I have to go.” She smiled coyly. “Maybe I’ll see you around.”
As she walked over to where Kakashi stood, she smirked, knowing what’s-his-name was totally checking out her ass. It wasn’t until she was outside that she punched Kakashi’s shoulder (rules and ranks were the furthest thing from her mind). When he winced and rubbed the wound, she added a slap to the back of his head.
“You are such a cockblock!” she muttered as they walked back to where most members of the Third Division were situated. “God, you’re like some overprotective father or something!”
Kakashi feigned innocence. “Me?” When Sakura raised a glowing fist, threatening him with a nice, chakra-laden punch, Kakashi patted her on the head and smiled. “Now, Sakura-chan, I like to think of it as ‘protecting your virtue.’”
She raised an eyebrow. “Because in the middle of a freaking war, the biggest threat to my virtue is a guy?”
“…yes.”
Sakura barely resisted hitting him again. “Sensei! Go away! I’m sixteen, not twelve!”
Kakashi looked a bit saddened by that bitch slap to reality. “Sakura-chan-”
“You owe me.”
“…what?”
Sakura sighed. “Sensei, that guy could’ve been like… my true love or whatever. What if I never see him again because he dies and you ruined everything?!”
“Right.” Kakashi snorted. “I think you’re blowing things out of proportion here-”
“TRUE. LOVE.”
“Sakura.” He was giving her that look he used to give them when they were genin. The one that said he was no longer amused. (And that they were going to run twenty laps around Konoha.)
Reluctantly, Sakura let up the heartbroken act and met his eyes. When he looked ready to speak, she immediately cut him off. “Oi, this isn’t going to be one of those ‘you’re the only one of my students left who I can protect’ speeches, right?”
“…no.”
“Good.” Sakura made an annoyed face. “Because that’s obnoxious. And annoying.”
“Yes.” Kakashi sighed. “I just forget that you’re not a kid anymore sometimes,” he admitted sadly. He looked at her and put a hand on her head. “It’s weird to see you flirting with guys now. Back when you were genin, the boys would always beat up anyone who would look your way.” He shrugged. “I suppose I feel like the duty’s mine now.”
Sakura glared at him. “The duty was never anyone’s.”
“I know.” He smiled regretfully. “But let a man pretend, Sakura-chan.”
She bit back whatever retort was hanging on her tongue and refrained from slapping his hand away. She always hated when he patted her on the head. While she knew that the gesture reminded him of happier days, it always felt particularly condescending to her.
“Sneaky bastard,” she mumbled, “You said you weren’t going to make one of those ‘you’re my only student left that I can protect’ speeches. Tch.”
He shrugged. “I’m a ninja, Sakura-chan. Sneakiness is what I do.”
“Whatever,” Sakura said as she walked away from him. She turned around, though, before she got too far and gave him a dirty look. “I still think you still ruined true love.”
Kakashi grinned, knowing her stubbornness wasn’t fuelled by resentment. “Eh, you'll be fine. Autumn skies, right?”
“…OH, MY GOD. YOU DID NOT JUST GO THERE.”
