So I just got back from a busy day of having more auditions for my movie and then going to see Urinetown, the musical in santa monica with my grandparets. My friend who I am friends with through our grandparents was in it. She played pennywise and her voice was amazing! I'd knew she was good, but I didn't know just how good she was. I hadn't seen her in about 4 years, so it was so nice to see her again. It seems like ever since going away from home it's always so nice to see someone from the past. I was sad that I didn't get more time to catch up with her, but hopefully some day soon we'll both be visiting our grandparents or something and get to catch up more.
So... the show... It was dificult at times to watch it without wanting to sing. since I did the show so recently I still knew all the lyrics and because of that I think I kinda missed some of the story because I was thinking the words in my head and not paying attention to what the words actually were. The singing in their production was really strong. (no pun intended with the whole strong...bobby strong thing) They were all really talented and well trained. And while some people in our production had that talent, others... well didn't. And they definitly had more time with the music too, so that was working to their advantage. They did a better job on the harmonys and especially the accaplella stuff than we did, probably because of their training and rehersal time as well.
One of the things I like that we did and they didn't was over exagerating some of the cornyness to the show. I felt like they didn't quite get the satire and a lot of the time they could have played certian lines bigger to make them funnier. And a little thing was that the person playing officer Barrel was a girl, so the whole Barrel confessing his love to lockstock wasn't quite as funny, but it still worked kinda.
The staging was a lot different. They didn't make fun of other musicals they way we did with the staging. But there were also some similar things like the cop song was staged similar because they used pairs and did the same motions for the chanting lines.
One thing I liked that they did better than the way we did it was at the end after bobby dies he came up from behind a screen and had on a feather halo and angel wings. I liked that a lot more than the black drapy things we had. And for the people like caldwell they had devel horns on.
There were so many little things that I liked and didn't like about they way they did things. I think if I didn't know they show so well and I didn't have the way we did it stuck in my head then I would have enjoyed it more and really liked it a lot. But I kept comparing it and it was also hard because I had been watching actors audition all day long and I was in a really critical state of mind and I was kinda worn out from that, so I think I had a more critical negative view of the acting. Infact at the beginning I had to stop myself from analyzing every little detail.
So all in all I liked it, I realized again what a great show it is and how much I miss doing it. when I talked to Leah (my friend who was pennywise) afterwards she heard that I had been in the show and asked what part I was. I said I was just a townsperson and one of the cops and she somehow in a compleatly non-condecending way managed to say that it must have been fun. She was saying that that's the best part and two of her favorite songs were the cop song and snuff the girl and she was sad she didn't get to be in either of them.
So today was a pretty busy long day and it's not really even over yet because I still have to finish packing because I have to be ready to leave tomorrow morning at 8am to go home!!!! so I guess I better get on that. I considered making this a lj cut, but they I realized that I'm way too lazy and so I'm not going to!
