Hey all. ^^ I was just sitting around reading, and the idea for this bitty scene popped into my head, and I had to write it down. XD It's a little on the angsty side, but nothing too dramatic. Mostly Rin/Obito conversation. ^^
Though the Memorial itself was not very wide, when she stood in front of it, running her fingers over the grooves that formed letters, the letters that formed names, the names that conjured memories, the stone seemed to stretch far beyond her brain's capacity to grasp the sheer enormity.
She felt so small here, so insignificant, a mouse lost in a maze. She couldn't find the way out, but...she didn't try. The individuals represented on this cold, hard surface had given their lives, had given everything they were so that she may feel the wind in her hair, the touch of rain on her skin, the bitter, bone-weary chill that settled around her as she held a silent vigil, alone.
Always alone. She never came accompanied, even though there was someone she'd like to share this with. Once, and only once, she had extended an invitation to him, and while his refusal was meant to be kind, she saw the contempt in the way his mouth quirked downward, in the way he could not quite look her in the eye. She did not ask him again, and he never spoke of it.
Nothing had been the same since Obito died, no matter how much they pretended the wounds didn't hurt.
Kakashi knew she loved him, yet that knowledge made him bitter. I don't deserve it, he told her, over and over and over, a hollow, mechanical phrase set on perpetual repeat. Save your heart for someone else. I'm not worth it.
I'm broken, was what he really said. You should have loved Obito. He would've given you the world.
Would have...could have...should have...
Past.
He was destryoing himself, and they both knew it.
She paused over the familiar indentation, the one she'd be able to pick out blindfolded, and leaned in close, pressed her lips to it.
Uchiha Obito.
"This isn't what you wanted, is it?" She pictured his smiling face, his wild black hair, those orange goggles he wore every day without fail because of his over-sensitive eyes. "You wanted us to be happy. You wanted Kakashi to change. He was so angry..." She liked talking to him, believing that wherever he was, he heard her. "Oh, Obito," she sighed, contemplative. "What an unholy mess."
Ya can't fix everything, Rins. His voice was so clear, so vivid. It was almost as though he were next to her, an arm draped about her shoulders, head tilted near her conspiratorially.
Bonnie and Clyde.
"But not for lack of trying." Her grin was rueful.
Life's full of blunders, kiddo. Makes us human. You're not God, ya know? Don't set your sights so high, or you'll be disappointed.
"So...I should just...turn my back on him?" She meant Kakashi, of course.
Obito's phantom chuckled. Hard-ass still needs a babysitter, eh? Maybe I should've stuck around longer, given him a bigger piece of my mind to choke on.
Rin shook her head, giggling in spite of herself. "That's not nice," she chided.
He's a big boy now. He can handle it.
"Mmm...I suppose."
Enough of this martyr crap. It doesn't suit you. And I don't expect to see you here a minute sooner than your appointed time, got it? Just survive, Rin. Do what you have to. Everything'll straighten itself out, I promise. You can help bear his burdens, but you can't make them yours. Remember that.
And then he was gone.
Rin opened her eyes, felt the rain, the chill, the stone beneath the pads of her fingers.
"I'll remember," she whispered.
------
Later, when Kakashi stands before the stone, he sees two faces, two friends, two lives...
And he finally understands.
"Thank you for asking," he murmurs, and rests his forehead against their names. "You won't be alone anymore."
