The city had been devoid of human life for a long while, but not devoid of activity. Those things were everywhere, roaming freely for the next victim or meal or whatever it was they did. The buildings may have gone quiet, but they were not empty

One would have thought that someone like Shirley, whose only advantage in this sort of situation was physical endurance thanks to being in the swimming club, would have been one of the first to fall when the city was taken over by the infection. Shirley herself was surprised that she was still standing, but she couldn't say she was none too happy about it. On the contrary, the girl looked haggard, almost dead herself as she stumbled through the wreckage of a building that she probably passed by many times when going to school, clutching a pistol that she found, attached to an arm that wasn't attached to anything anymore. The clip was full. She hoped it would stay that way

"...!"
Someone was calling out. Someone was trying to get in. Someone was too close.
He turned his head, watching the source of the noise. A girl, pretty and weak, trying to break through the barricade. Why was she here? Why try to get in? He wanted to be alone. He wanted to be alone and she was here why was she here she shouldn't be in here
Something in the shadows began to glow red as the figure began to rise off the floor. If it had been muffled crying before, it was growling now.
Re: i am a terrible personsanguinarioMay 6 2010, 23:51:38 UTC
The growling wasn't coming from one throat - but two. A second throat was adding itself, a higher pitch with a rolling purr, helping to create a cacophony of inhuman noises footstepsfootstepsPULSEBEAT

Slithering out on all fours, bare toes arched high and fingertips just touching the floor, a hooded figure left a sticky trail behind it, approaching its infected kin in the room. Once this one had heard the telltale sign of a survivor, its warning sound had begun... and as the survivor approached, it increased in volume until its chest was nearly buzzing with the vibrationsGETOUT
With a SCREECH the infected had leapt across the room, knocking guns from the table and sending bullets like beads rolling across the floor in every direction and ripping into the back of the crouching shape, the faint red glow lighting up the streams of blood that were splitting the air with each bent claw that split the witch's flesh.
nevermind, you guys are more terrible than i amassumptioMay 7 2010, 00:08:16 UTC
Her initial hope and joy at possibly finding another uninfected evaporated rather quickly when Shirley looked through boards, gasping at the sight of red. Whatever it was, it was growling now, a low sound that was not human. No, she hadn't found anyone, just something. The girl already timidly backed away, breath heaving, shuddering gasps barely pushing air in and out of her lungs as she pointed the gun at the blocked doorway. But her hands were shaking and she had no idea what was in there and I can't do this help me!
What finally snapped Shirley out of it was a loud screech, and the sound of something heavy falling on the ground and it was like Shirley had woken up out of her trance. She immediately bolted, spinning on her heel and flying down the hallway. Out, she had to get out, she made a horrible mistake!
WE LOVE YOU? :DanemptydecapoMay 7 2010, 00:21:47 UTC
The growling only got louder and more angered the longer the girl continued to stare. She was staring at him. Staring, watching, standing there.
There could have been a chance that the monster would have calmed if she only left him in peace. Her presence was triggering the anger, so if she kept moving, it would have ignored her. But its sights were on her the moment the other being in the room came from behind and--
Pain. Pain. It hurt, it hurt!
SCREAM
That was the warning. That was all the warning, a constant, ear-shattering and murderous scream as the man pushed himself off the ground and sped toward the girl, horribly mutated and clawed hands outstretched at his side to rip her to pieces to end her to make her go away GO AWAY and the barricade in the way was like cardboard tearing under his claws and if she didn't keep running she was going to be next.
then why do you hurt me so x-(assumptioMay 7 2010, 02:31:24 UTC
Shirley had thought (hoped oh god) that she ran far away enough from the creature that it would lose sight of her and ignore her, but she could still hear the violent sounds of the wood literally bursting apart, and the girl tried very hard not to scream as she ran even faster. She wouldn't be able to keep up like this, if she kept running like this...! Gasping now, Shirley crashed into a door that she knew led to stairs. Stairs, could she go down them fast enough?
There wasn't enough time to think about it, and Shirley's feet were already flying down the steps, sometimes bypassing one altogether. It was dangerous to take the stairs, as she was already half stumbling and half falling them, but she had to get out! Out out, if she went out to the building, that thing should leave her alone, right?
The haunting scream still pierced her eardrums, making Shirley gasp even harder in terror as it felt like it was right behind her, still screaming. Was it?! No, she couldn't look, she had to run.
IT'S HOW WE SHOW AFFECTION ROUND THESE PARTSanemptydecapoMay 7 2010, 03:09:10 UTC
That's because he was still right behind her, still letting out those horrible screams as he came closer and closer. She had distance on her, but it didn't let up, occasionally clawing the air right behind her in an attempt to down her, incapacitate, kill kill kill KILL HER
The stairs didn't stop it, didn't stumble it. But it wasn't like the other infected. It wouldn't pounce her. It would just keep pursuing her until it caught up with her and brought her down.
The witch let out another scream and swiped at her from behind, those long claws dragging down and trying to drag her with them.
YOUR AFFECTION IS FRIGHTENING AND PAINFULassumptioMay 7 2010, 04:28:21 UTC
"AHHHHH!"
She shouldn't have screamed, she didn't have the breath to spare to scream, but she let out a piercing shriek to match the creature's own when she felt the tips of those terrible claws pierce through her school uniform, just barely missing her skin. She knew it missed because she felt no pain, just the cool air seeping through the cuts. Shirley's actions grew even more erratic as she crashed through the door leading to one of the floors. The stairs weren't working, she had to hide, she had to get this thing off of her!
Shirley madly looked around, for a door, anything that she could run through. The first one she saw was surrounded by gas cans, but she ran for it anyway, knocking one over accidentally as she swung open the door and then threw herself inside, slamming it shut. The room itself could have been filled with monsters, but luckily for her, it wasn't. There was no lock though, and the door would not hold for very long. She knew this, deep down inside, which was why Shirley stumbled all the way to the back wall

BUT IT'S ALL I HAAAAAAAAVEanemptydecapoMay 7 2010, 04:49:49 UTC
She was still running, hiding now, and if there was any amount of higher brain functions still working in the infected's mind, it only proved to make him even more angered with the girl. The door was treated exactly like the barricade before, clawed open like it was nothing but an inconvenience because it was he had to kill her, so the blockade in front of him was destroyed in seconds. But in the same motion, those elongated claws tore not only through the wood, but the fallen tank of gasoline. All it took was one spark between the floor and the claws to ignite the gasoline below and erupt into a sea of flames.
Suddenly the constant, piercing screams of murderous rage shifted into horrified terror and cries of pain. Fire. He was on fire. He was burning he was burning

The sudden sound of wood being destroyed, the shrieks from the witch, and Shirley's own sobbing was getting too much for her to bear. She simply sat there, waiting for death to take her already, because it was too late and she was cornered and

"This way!" a small voice echoed through the hall outside. The shrill tone carried further than the deeper one that responded to it. The first speaker replied, "I hear somethin'!" Whoever his companion was sounded less than enthusiastic about this explanation

For Shirley, it was getting difficult to hear anything else anymore, as her eardrums were still ringing from the sounds of those screams. She probably couldn't hear anything over her sobbing anyway, the depths of her sadness too great for her to compose herself. The girl probably didn't realize how long she had spent just sobbing to herself, mumbling weakly. To anyone around her, it might have sounded suspicious enough
