I love them because I go back in late September, I can change classes often (so if I'm stuck in a shitty introsem I can finish sooner), and break schedule (mostly) makes sense.
I hate them because I go home after everyone else, midterms last the entire quarter and have I mentioned EVERYONE ELSE IS HOME BEFORE YOU?
Even if you're used to taking it slow though, college will be a bit of a step up anyway and I don't think semester or quarter will make a huge difference. I could be wrong, but we had semesters at my high school and I loved the change of pace.
it is inconvenient to have a different start/end time for the school year from everyone else. but at least we don't take finals after christmas like harvard and princeton. in my one year experience, the last 2 weeks of the quarter can be quite stressful because you haven't finished those projects and essays yet and you still have to study for finals, but so does everyone else, and people get through it okay. quarters mean that classes don't last as long (esp good when you don't really like them), you can take more classes, and presumably this means you can explore more and learn more.
I love the pace of quarters. Like was mentioned before, you get to take more classes and explore more, which is especially good if you're unsure about what you want to study. As far as the stress goes, it's bearable. I feel like if I had semesters, I would be MORE stressed because I know that I would probably leave all my assignments and big projects till the very end and I would be screwed. Having quarters really keeps me on my game because I know that there's not a lot of time to slack off so I force myself to keep up with classes.
It all depends on your study habits and your pace. If you're a person who likes to take it easy, put a few things off till later, and don't really care about taking a lot of classes, then semesters might be for you. But if you like classes, like managing your time well, and like the fast pace (and some of the stress), then quarters are for you.
quarter system = more different classes (if you're academically ADD like me) or more similar classes (if you're more a depth over breadth kinda person)
being use to "taking it slow" really doesn't matter once you get here. adjusting to the quarter system is just one of many changes you undergo in starting college. for me, the transition was seamless.
yeah. I agree with what everyone has said. I think in the past, particularly freshman year, I have had trouble adjusting to the quarter system and it went a little faster than I was comfortable with, but in general, I think there are two important things I should have done to really allay (sp?) that problem
( ... )
well, that's for quarter system. i don't actually know about semester system. what major, or what sort of thing, do you want to do? like, techie or fuzzy? engineering, bio, chem, english...??
I have no clue. I'm only a sophomore (will be a junior in three days, yay!) but I think something in international relations or something like that. I took accounting this year, and realized business was not my thing. So probably international relations or history. =/

I feel a little better now. My cousin goes to Davis, which also has a quarter schedule, and she sort of scared me away from that.
midterms last the entire quarter
What exactly does that mean?
