Appearance: Right here.

Psychology: John is the biggest, dorkiest prankster in the entirety of Homestuck. He loves pulling pranks, even simple stuff like balancing a bucket over a doorframe so it will spill on someone's head. He does a lot of stuff for shits and giggles, because that's the kind of person he is: he loves a good laugh every now and then. He's especially fond of puns and time travel shenanigans too.

But as much as he loves to prank people, John keeps his jokes simple and tasteful. He doesn't do anything that could seriously hurt someone (at least not on purpose), because as far as he's concerned there's no fun in hurting someone. It's only a good joke if everyone can laugh about it later. Besides that, John just doesn't have it in himself to hurt most people in the world. He's alright with fighting monsters or anyone who is hurtful and dangerous, but beyond that he couldn't raise a hand against someone, especially not his friends. He would rather talk through problems before resorting to violence.

This is because John is a generally agreeable person. He is just so positive about anything and everything, even if everyone else is stuck in a pit of despair. John would rather look on the bright side of life than worry about things he can't change. This positive attitude is absolutely infectious, and often John can cheer up his friends just by talking with them. He's the go-to guy for a morale boost.

While it can be a good thing, being nice also causes problems for John. Since he would rather get along with people than fight, he ends up being a pretty passive person, often listening to what other people say to do instead of making the choices for himself. He also has a habit of listening to advice from untrustworthy sources, which has gotten him killed before (he got better) and has made his life more difficult. And while he does know that just blindly following directions other people give him is a bad idea, he still ends up doing it all the time.

The real reason for his habit of listening to bad sources of information is that he doesn't think of the consequences for his actions. He doesn't stop to think that oh, maybe these people don't have his best intentions in mind. He just thinks they know more than him, so he happily goes along with what they tell him to do. This is also true for just about everything he does. He doesn't even evaluate the potential danger in the decisions he makes. He just plows on ahead with whatever plan he has (or whatever plan someone else thought up and got him roped into doing), figuring that he'll deal with any problems when he comes across them.

This attitude would be absolutely infuriating, if not for the fact that John is such a lovable doof. He does everything with the best of intentions in mind and no malice hidden in his actions. He honestly believes that what he does is right, and it's not until everything goes to Hell that he realizes that hey, maybe this wasn't the best thing to do. And when he does mess up, John is always apologetic and tries to make things better. It makes him seem naïve at worst, and because of that most characters in Homestuck have a hard time staying mad at John.

It helps that John truly cares for his friends. He loves them like they're his family, and he puts their wellbeing over even his own. He would gladly give up everything he has if only to keep his friends alive and well. Trying to harm them in any way is a quick way to get on John's incredibly short shit list. He also tries his best to make his friends feel better whenever they're not quite themselves, because hey, that's what friends do.

Along with that, John isn't one to judge people. He accepts everyone as they are, even if they're not exactly the best people. He may get angry at some of the things they do, but ultimately he doesn't try to change them in any way. He tries to focus on the good parts of a person, rather than worry about the bad. This willingness to accept people for who they are also goes a long way towards making new friends. When someone hates him, he just responds back with cheerfulness and smiles, which are effective tools at wearing down the cold exterior of a jaded individual. This is how John makes several of his friends over the course of Homestuck: through love and forgiveness.

John's tendency to be kind, cheerful, and forgiving is what makes him a good leader. He's not the brightest kid in Homestuck, and he's far from the best strategist. He lacks most of the qualities someone would expect in a leader, and he's more likely to listen to someone else's orders than give his own. Still, everyone looks to him when they need guidance, and that's because he is very good at moral support. When the chips are down, John is the one who can rally the troops and make everyone believe they can succeed. What's more, John honestly cares about everyone, and he will make sure they come out of hairy situations alive. This is why the other kids consider him the leader: he is who they look to in order to assure themselves that everything is going to be ok.

It's also worth noting that, while John isn't the smartest, he's easily the most creative of the kids playing Sburb. He does need a bit of prompting to get started, but once he gets going, he can make the most beautiful things. This is the kid who combined an iron and a hammer to make the WRINKLEFUCKER and actually used it as a viable weapon. Later on he has to get to the center of Skaia, and all he has to use are hammers and his wind powers. So what does he do? He summons a freaking huge tornado and drills to the center of the planet. His problem-solving might not be the most effective all the time, but it certainly is creative.

All in all, John is just a caring kid who wants to do right by his friends. He does his best to keep his spirits up, and he is good at making friends and cheering them up. He may be a complete dork who loves to joke around, but ultimately he does it because he's happy and healthy and wants his friends to be happy too.

Other Skills/Abilities: Firstly, all of the kids in Homestuck have something called a Strife Specibus. This functions as their main weapon within the game Sburb. Someone with a Strife Specibus can store any number of a certain kind of weapon within the specibus card (IE if you have knifekind, you can store any weapon that can be considered a knife) and use them at will. John's Strife Specibus is hammerkind, and this is a list of all the hammers he currently has. Strife Specibus works like a literal hammerspace, so they aren't physically on him until he calls them out. More information on the Strife cards can be found here. John also has the Bunnykind card, but does not have any bunnies within it.

John has also managed to weaponize his Sylladex. Normally a Sylladex is just an inventory: the user puts items into it, and they take them out when they need to use them. John's method of recalling items from his inventory (his can switch between "First In Last Out" and "First In First Out" at will) will shoot out objects if he tries to force in more items than it can physically hold. This means that if he puts heavy or sharp things in his Sylladex, they can be thrown out fast enough to be viable weapons. More information on this can be found here.

In Sburb, every player is given a role and a power, both of which affect the kind of abilities they have within the game. John is the Heir of Breath. Canon hasn't shown how being an Heir affects his abilities, but his power of Breath has been explained. He basically has control over wind. He's been shown to summon huge windstorms, make a car fly across the sky, put out fires that engulfed a whole planet, use a tornado to drill to the center of another planet, and summon tornadoes on a third planet made of lava which made lava tornadoes. It's a very versatile power which we haven't seen the limits of yet, but they seem to be defined by having to do with wind.

By the point I'm taking John from, he has ascended to a higher level of the game, which is called God Tier. Basically, a player who has reached God Tier has all of their previous abilities amped up to 11. Before ascending, John only had a basic control over his windy powers. After ascension, he had both power (enough to drill a hole to the center of a planet) and control (enough to fly a car within inches of the ground without crashing) that he didn't have before. Becoming a God Tier also allows the player to fly.

Along with the increase in abilities, God Tier players can only be permanently killed in two very specific ways. If their death is heroic or just, then they will remain dead. Otherwise, they come back to life with their wounds completely healed.

As a note, I saw the bit about how deaths have consequences in RealityShifted, so if you want to say that the cheatydeathpowers are effectively turned off in the game itself (or they are warped in some other way so that John doesn't get any 'get out of death free' cards) then I would be fine with that.

Other Weaknesses: John is deathly allergic to peanuts, and most likely all other nuts as well. He also seems to be the most unskilled of the four kids when it comes to using his Strife Specibus, as he had no previous training in how to use hammers as a weapon. He kind of just makes shit up as he goes along. He wears glasses, too, so presumably he would have a hard time fighting if he lost his glasses in a scuffle, what with not being able to see and all.

History: Everything and anything you ever needed to know about John is here

Canon Point: End Of Act 5, pretty much where the "Sburb" section in the link above ends.

Reality Description: Every player in sburb gets their own personal planet for reasons within the game. John's reality is his planet, the Land of Wind and Shade (LOWAS).

The planet is much smaller than Earth. For comparison, look at this picture. That white dot on top of the planet, just above the cloud cover, is a normal-sized house. The planet's surface is covered in blue, glowing rocks, with rivers of oil running all over the place, eventually flowing into giant oil oceans. Among the rocks are trees and mushrooms, which glow a bright blue. Every so often there are pipes sticking out of the ground as well, which are part of a mailing system called Parcel Pyxis. Above all of this, thick clouds cover the sky, trapping the fireflies (which can be seen glowing just below the cloudline) and keeping the planet in a permanent twilight. LOWAS also has it's own theme song, which can be heard here. You can also see a brief glimpse of LOWAS itself there.

Scattered across the planet are several small villages full of talking salamanders, which are basically the NPCs of John's planet. They have shops and ask John to complete quests for them. Besides the villages, there's two other points of interest: John's house, and a giant castle made of rocks and pipes. John's house started out as fairly normal, just as it's seen in the picture linked above, but over the course of Homestuck it was expanded and built up to be hundreds upon hundreds of stories tall, like a skyscraper except still within the footprint of a normal house. This very tall house is on top of the one bit of land that sticks out above the clouds. The giant castle is home to John's Denzien, which is like the end boss of his planet. Since John hasn't defeated his Denizen yet, it is still slumbering deep within the castle.

I tried to be brief, so more information about LOWAS (as well as some pretty rad pictures) can be found here.

First Person Speaking Sample: [So here is a goofy-looking kid who is actually quite lost at the moment. He spends a few moments looking around himself, as if he's trying to shake himself of an illusion and go back to his normal reality. Except it doesn't work, he's actually here, this is real life.]

Woooooooow! This is so COOL!

[Clearly he is not fazed by this at all. A grin quickly spreads over his face.]

This is amazing! I'm in the stars! Well I guess I was already in the stars, but this looks even cooler than before! Those explanations don't do this place justice. Though it's a little weird, I can't see the floor at all. Is that normal? I mean, even glass floors give off a reflection of light. Oh well, if it works then it works, right? There's no need to worry too much about it.

So I guess this means there's more weird timey-wimey stuff now, huh? That's fine by me, we can use all the extra time we can get. Plus this place is pretty awesome, I can't wait to check it all out! Man, I feel like an explorer again, like one of those guys from Indiana Jones, except with less archeology and more shenanigans. Oh, what shenanigans there will be.

And hey, I bet we can find Rose and Dave while we're at it too! They didn't get too far away, right Jade?

…Jade? Are you here?

Third Person Writing Sample: So this was it. He was all that stood between the Scratch and those who wanted to prevent it from happening. Rose and Dave were off taking care of the Green Sun, something which John really didn't want to think about at that moment because he wasn't sure how they were going to get back. Jade was…somewhere. Probably getting the frog ready to make the jump to the new session. Karkat and the other trolls were an entire universe away, dealing with their own problems. John was completely alone on the surface of Dave's planet, the Land of Heat and Clockwork, where the device to reset the universe could be found.

Well, alone as far as other players went, at least. Sburb was a game, and games aren't designed to be reset easily. It looked like every monster imaginable was shambling towards him, dead set on stopping him from causing the Scratch that would reset the game. Ogres the size of buildings, giant basilisks, and thousands of imps all made their way towards John, arms extended, ready to snatch him up and crush him.

John glanced down at the giant record he was standing on. Funnily enough, the Scratch was represented in-game by literally scratching a record, though this record was as wide as a city block. The small needle was making steady progress across the ridged surface, but it was still going to take time to finish. John looked back up, facing the hoards of monsters coming at him from all sides. He had to hold them all off for at least a few minutes.

Was he scared? Hell yes. He didn't know if he could come out of this fight alive, let alone keep them from reaching the record before the Scratch happened. John knew he could cheat death now, so long as his death wasn't heroic or just, but even reviving would cost him precious minutes. Plus this would probably count as a heroic death, which would leave him dead permanently with no more chances at life. So yes, he was scared.

But he wouldn't give up and run away.

Everyone was counting on him. They couldn't hope to beat Sburb, not with the enemies as strong as they were. Their only hope was to Scratch the game, to escape into a reset session and try again, hopefully avoiding the mistakes that had made this session unwinnable. Everyone had their own part to play, and if any one of them failed, then their plan would fail. John's life wasn't the only life on the line here, and he wasn't about to give up on his friends. They had all tried so hard, and they deserved better than what this game could offer them. They deserved their second chance.

John called forth one of his stronger hammers and held it tightly in his hands. It was going to take everything he could offer, and maybe even more than that, but he had to try. This was a life or death situation in more ways than one.

Still, despite the tense situation, John found himself smiling. Once this was all over, and they were in the next session, they would finally meet up again. All four of them, together at last. That thought was what would keep him going, even when he was exhausted and a hair's breadth away from falling. They were waiting for him, and it would be completely uncool to keep them waiting.

"See you guys on the other side," John said, and with that he moved forward to start the long, crucial battle.

Did you read the rules? yep!
