save tonight, fight the break of dawn [come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone]

It was her last night in Miami.

She was getting on a plane the next morning, and she had been avoiding this as best she could. It wasn’t that she didn’t like Michael, didn’t want to go that far with him, but she wasn’t young enough for one night stands and non-commitments. It was because she wanted more that she was holding back. She wasn’t going to settle for some quick fling in Miami with this guy-and if this meant having nothing at all, she could live with that. She figured it was better than regretting that she did it all together.

She was only in Miami for a week. It was the first week of actual vacation that she’d had in a long, long time, and she was planning on enjoying it. What she didn’t plan on was stumbling onto one of his “jobs” and almost completely ruining it for him. She was a little put-off at first, because her cop instincts told her that what he was doing wasn’t exactly on the level, but she let it go. He swore up and down to her that he was helping someone, and she didn’t believe him at first. But he slowly weeded his way into getting her to trust him as they kept running into each other over and over again, almost to the point where she was starting to think that someone was trying to tell her something.

There were points where they had had ample opportunity to try and make something out of what their options were, but Angell never pushed it. She couldn’t. She didn’t have the time to spend in Miami that she wanted to, and she certainly didn’t want to come off the vacation regretting it. She didn’t get a lot of vacation time as it was-she didn’t want to come off this feeling like she’d wasted it.

She knew this was pushing it, but here she was. He wasn’t in the house, so she knew he was out on a job, and she waited outside. She’d just shown up to say goodbye, because she felt she owed him that much, but she wasn’t expecting what had come afterwards. The sun was down by the time he got there, and he at first seemed surprised to see her, before grabbing his things and made his way inside, gesturing for her to follow him.

“Were you waiting long?”

“No,” she said, shaking her head slightly as she rubbed her arms. Miami always got cooler once the sun went down, and she had left the jacket she was wearing in the car. She was just looking to make this quick, after all, because staying was only going to make this harder. Michael was quiet for a moment, finishing putting some things away, before turning to look at her again.

“So-what brings you by?”

She knew he was right to be curious about it-she rarely ever came to see him at his place. He was usually meeting her at hers. This was something she wanted to do on her own terms, so she had come to him, doing this on his turf, and surprising him to boot.

“I just-wanted to say goodbye,” she said with a nod. “My flight back to New York is tomorrow.”

Michael was quiet, watching her for a minute, before responding. “I see.”

And then they stared at each other for a while. That was the problem with a guy like Michael. You never knew where his head was out, or what he was thinking, and he never said much either. It was what made things complicated, and made her appreciate New York boys all the more because they weren’t afraid to speak their minds. Even if it meant getting their asses kicked. Michael kept too much to himself, and that made things-awkward.

She waited for another moment, before starting to turn away from him, heading back towards the door. “I should head back to the hotel. I still have packing to do.”

She was moving her quickly, and then her hand was on the doorknob, when she heard him behind her, his steps moving quickly as he crossed the room. She turned to face him, confused as to what he wanted, but she was surprised when he pinned her to the door, cupping her face in his hands and pulling her in for a warm kiss.

She knew that she should have pulled away from him. She should have said no, and left. But after driving herself crazy, wondering what it would be like, she practically melted into the kiss, moving her hands to his waist and letting him pull her closer as the kiss deepened. With each time he pulled her closer, she crossed another barrier that she had set for herself, and the next thing she knew, she was collapsing back onto his bed, just leaning back to go along for the ride.

When it was over, she knew that she had to leave. But she just couldn’t summon the energy to get up and leave. This was why she didn’t want this to happen. Now she didn’t want to leave, even though she knew she had to.

She finally found the energy to get out of bed, she felt his arm tighten across her waist. When she looked over at him, he pushed himself up to pull her closer. “Don’t leave yet.”

“I have to,” she said softly, but not pulling away completely. “My plane-”

“Just stay a little bit longer,” he murmured, pulling her in for another kiss. She should have broken it as soon as it started, but she didn’t. Instead, she leaned back, letting him push her back onto the bed, soaking up as much of their last moments as she could, and damning the consequences for the time being.

She could always reschedule her flight. She wouldn’t always be able to have this.
