[Not binding on any Danny-just something Danny would do.]
“Always be nice to those younger than you, because they are the ones who will be writing about you.”
“Is there a problem, Officer Dewan?”
The kid was a rookie, fresh out of the academy. The precinct was littered with them lately-fresh faced kids who wanted to ‘make a difference’ and hadn’t been exposed to the tough rap that was this job quite yet, and while most of the cops were happy for the fresh blood-they were pretty tough on them too. They had to get up to speed and they had to get up there fast.
Dewan, however, was outright terrified of her. He had been since the minute he got assigned to her case, before she had even said a word to him, and that, as a general rule, was a bit troubling. People shouldn’t be scared of her before they’ve even met her. And as far as she could see, with the job he was doing wouldn’t have warranted her to be hard on him in any way. Which is why the fact that he was scared of her was a little bit more than confusing.
“No! No, ma’am. No problem at all.”
Angell’s head tilted to the side slightly, one hand resting on her hip as she looked at him. “Can I ask, then, why the hell you’re acting so terrified around me?”
At that, Dewan’s eyes dropped to the ground, and Angell automatically knew what had happened. Someone had tried to haze the poor kid. She didn’t know who yet, but when she found out, she was going to pay them a not-so-pleasant visit.
“Who told you about me?”
Dewan looked up at her again, before back down at the ground again. “Detective-Detective Messer.”
“Detective Messer?”
“He said that you ate rookies for breakfast,” Dewan said as he nodded. “And that you knew people high up on the ladder. And that if I even so much as took a step out of line, you would condemn me to traffic duty for the rest of my career.”
“Detective Messer said all this to you?”
“Yes. He said he was just looking out for me-didn’t want me to get into trouble.”
“Here’s some helpful advice for you, Dewan,” Angell said with a sigh, before pinching the bridge of her nose slightly. “Detective Messer? Is full of shit. Unless he’s giving you an order related to a case, it’s wise not to listen to a word he says.”
“It is?”
“Trust me-I speak from experience,” Angell sighed. “I’m not going to transfer you to traffic court if you piss me off.”
“You won’t?”
“No.” She paused for a minute, before giving him a smirk. “I’ll just outright kick your ass.”
Dewan paused for a moment, the fear starting to sneak into his features again before nodding. “Right. Of course.”
Angell just chuckled slightly. “Get back to the canvas-see what you can find.”
Dewan scuttled off and she turned back to Danny. He was crouching in front of the body, resting on the balls of his feet as he took pictures of the body and when Angell moved forward, her hand connected with the back of his head, nearly sending him falling forward into the body.
“‘ey!” Danny protested, giving her a look. “What was that for?”
“Dewan,” she stated clearly, and at that he just grinned slightly, before pushing himself up onto his feet.
“Aw, c’mon, Angell-you love it when the rookies are terrified of ya.”
“Yeah,” she said with a sigh. “But I like to do it myself, smartass. So if you’d kindly leave me out of your little hazing rituals-”
“Alright, alright,” Danny said with a sigh before going back to work. I’ll threaten them with Maka instead.”
“I appreciate it,” Angell said with a smirk, before looking over at the work he was doing and shifting back to business. “So what have you got?”
