Chapter Sixteen: The Joining of Hufflepuff and Gryffindor

As complex as the story of the founders is, the love story between Helga Hufflepuff and Godric Gryffindor is quite simple. The two had known each other the longest, since they were teenagers, and they had always been friends. It was only natural then, that they were close. The tale is known of Slytherin and Gryffindor’s friendship but it is not as widely spread about Hufflepuff and Gryffindor.

When Hogwarts opened, there were chores split up between the four of them. When Helga was through in the kitchens, she would often go up to Godric’s office and help him make sure that the castle was safe. The myth is that Helga helped charm Gryffindor’s often rumored about, goblin-made sword. Helga was better at those sorts of charms even though food was her specialty. Although the sword has never been found, it is rumored that it contained all sorts of interesting charms that would make anybody’s head spin as they tried to figure out all of its secrets.

Godric ran his fingers along the edge of the blade, holding it away from him. “It is finished?” Helga asked, leaning forward in anticipation. They had been working on the sword for weeks, making it indestructible. At least, they had been trying. “We have finally managed it?”

“It appears so,” Godric responded, swishing the sword through the air and they could both see the glint of the sword as the light streamed through the window. He looked up as Helga stood and he slowly put the sword down onto the desk. The next thing would be to find a safe hiding place for the sword, a place where only somebody who was worthy could retrieve it.

Helga was smiling at him, the joy evident on her face. Godric had been talking about the sword, the indestructible sword, since they were young. He had always wanted it and now they were powerful enough to make it happen. The power was daunting, giving her the sense that she could do anything. In that moment, she wanted to run down to the Muggle village across the way and tell them about magic, display all the wondrous things that she could do. It was a silly idea though. It could never happen and so she contented herself with hugging Godric tightly, the joy of the success spilling out in her movements.

Godric hugged her back, holding her close.

It is said that that was what started the relationship between Helga and Godric. Since the two had known each other so long, Helga always felt comfortable being herself in his presence. They rarely worried about the problems of the times, such as a woman getting too close to a man. That could have contributed as well. Of course, it must be reminded that there was never as much need for females to be modest in the wizarding world. There was never a focus on which was the stronger sex.

When Helga and Godric first began their relationship is anybody’s guess. All historians know is that it was before Salazar left the school, because Salazar knew about the relationship and after the founding of Hogwarts. Other than that, we will, perhaps, never know. Historians have searched through Hogwarts for generations trying to find a timeline for the relationship but it has never been found, much like the elusive Chamber of Secrets that Salazar supposedly made. Of course, you can learn more about that in Chapter 26.

Helga looked over as Godric helped peel potatoes, something that Salazar would scorn over. Thinking about it, Helga had a feeling that Rowena would as well. It was nice down in the kitchens, though, with just the two of them. It gave them a chance to talk as they made dinner for the dozens of students that were roaming the castle. “My Charms class is slowly starting to perfect Cheering Charms,” Helga said, taking a large pot over to the fireplace. When she put it down she stopped and looked at Godric, not even bothering to hide her smile. “It is really great what we are doing for these children.”

“It is really great what you are doing for these children, Helga,” Godric responded because it was the truth. Rowena, Godric, and Salazar all worked with the students but the students had a connection with Helga. The student body was small, only perhaps a little more than a hundred students and so whenever one of them needed something they went to Helga. There was something about Helga that was so warm, so inviting, so friendly, so loyal and honest. Godric had noticed it his whole life. There was just something about her. “This school wouldn’t be able to stand without you.”

Helga blushed, laughing quietly. She enjoyed the castle, the children, working with her friends. Her life had been doomed to nothing but a marriage with children before Godric had contacted her a few years ago telling her that he had met two people and they wanted to start a school. She just thanked the stars every day that Godric had invited her to join them. “We’re all doing this together,” Helga said, taking a sip from her goblet. It was one of the few possessions that she had taken from her home when Godric had come to get her. She cherished it above all other items of hers.

Godric looked at her for a while, smiling.

The wide belief is that Helga was known for her cooking charms and so she was assigned to the kitchens. It is also a widely considered belief that Godric often spent his time in the kitchens with her. It was Godric who originally came up with the idea of hiring house elves to work in the kitchens because as more students joined the school the work became too much for Godric and Helga alone. Helga was against the idea. She wished to take care of the food but the school grew and grew.

Perhaps it is that that sparked their relationship, or perhaps the end of their relationship. There are many parts of the relationship between Helga and Godric that nobody knows the exact details. Rumors, myths, and legends have been spread but they run rampant. The Chamber of Secrets is one such rumor, as is the rumor of a room that is whatever the finder wants it to be. If only the walls could tell the stories, this book could be more complete.

Helga never remembered the exact date that she first kissed Godric. It was in the gardens, her vegetable gardens with tomatoes and basil and bell peppers, and it was a long time coming. There were students milling around the grounds before the final exam that would signal the end of the school year and the trip back to their homes. Helga couldn’t wait a moment longer, though, as Godric leaned over the plant. He straightened up, smiled at her and she was lost. She moved towards him and kissed him on the lips.

The students stopped what they were doing, watching in awe as Godric wrapped his arms around her waist for he had wanted this just as long as she had. He had wanted her when they were teenagers, growing up together but he had never had the nerve, too shy when he was young. By the time he had come into his bravery, he considered it too late. He pulled back for a breath and looked into her eyes. “I have wanted to do this for so long. Ever since I first got to know you.”

“You should have,” Helga whispered. Nothing much changed between them because they had always loved each other. They had always been the best of friends, their friendship so much deeper and more powerful than hers with Rowena and his with Salazar. It had lasted through the years.

Godric kissed her and Helga closed her eyes.

Myths with no proof. It is known that Godric and Helga were in love. Their love withstood many arguments, misunderstandings and a lot of time. Did they last? Well, the romantics out there would like to believe so. Like the beginning, the historians have found no proof of the ending of their relationship. The romantics have taken that to mean that they lasted.

Perhaps they did. Perhaps they didn’t. Godric and Helga’s love, though, never died. The one story that has lasted, that has gone through the generations, is the story of them. The stories of the way that they looked at each other, the way that they acted around each other. Their love story is simple. They were best friends. They were in love. And that’s all there is to that.

“I read about it in Hogwarts, A History.”
