Dean sat down at the kitchen table and scribbled down a note:
Dear God,
Help my brother from monsters
Then, with no idea where to put it where God would find it, he left it on the table where John found it the next morning. He smiled sadly as he read it, knowing that no child should know what Dean already knew--that monsters were real.
He folded the paper, careful not to wreck the letters Dean had to work so hard to learn. He put it in his wallet for safe keeping.
When Sam had told him there was a monster under his bed the night before, he had dutifully checked and told him to go back to sleep.
Dean had sat up with Sammy until he fell asleep. He must have written the note later because John doubted Dean would have left Sam alone, as scared as he was.
John hadn't been surprised to find Sam in Dean's bed in the morning.
