Having been raised catholic and still having faith I get annoyed when people make assumptions on what they think that means and how they think I must view the world. I was a bit put out at a recent comment which I'm sure was misguided but annoyed me about gay marriage. I threw me back twenty years to a conversation I had with an aunt. Remember this was still the 80s and said aunt was very Christian.
I was upset as a teacher I had was getting a lot of trouble because it had been found out she was gay. One child even said his mum told him that meant she was going to hell.
When my aunt found out I was upset she imparted the below advice.
"The bible wasn't written by the lord himself and the church always seems to have a different view on how the book should be read.
Just remember that gods main message was love thy neighbour and live a good and honourable life. If this lady is as lovely as you say and sharing the love god gave her with another person then I doubt god would care if that person was a lady or a gentlemen.
Dont you think that god has far more wicked people to send to hell than your teacher and her ladyfriend so don't worry. Just tell the silly people that god wouldn't want them picking on someone. "
I know that this was to a child so is rather simple but it had an effect on me as a child.
