Bad blocks on the drive. It's dead.
Ubuntu can read the drive just fine, even the windows partition. Windows can't deal with it. This may be because the bad blocks are where the Windows system files live.
In any case, the system manufacturer is shipping me a new one, under warranty, and I don't appear to have lost any data. Just a day's worth of work at a critical time.
