Some small farms are not required to pay minimum wage and in 15 states farms aren't required to offer workers' compensation.

This is another thing that annoys me. Why do we have federal and state minimum wage laws if there are so many exceptions? I understand that a small farm may just basically be family, so were these laws originally written to say that family farmers don't have to make formal arrangements to pay relatives? Otherwise, why shouldn't a formal job not have formal pay and workers' compensation? Why do restaurant waitstaff work under a different minimum wage and then live on the kindness of strangers? I'm really against all of these exceptions. I feel like they're only there to uphold the tradition of people in these jobs being undervalued.
