Ammanach: More on faction

Feb 28, 2006 12:57

Just as it is possible to ingratiate yourself into the good graces of a faction, it is also possible to gain "negative" faction as a group. You do this in several ways: Acting against the group, failing at trying to build faction with them, or going into "faction" debt with them.

Negative faction works similarly to positive faction, only instead of giving the player's bonus dice, they give the player penalty dice when used in interactions with the faction. This represents not only the lack of good will, but also the drive on the part of the faction to "beat" the player. Negative faction can build up in a bank, so much so that the faction will proactively seek to destroy the player if it gets too high.

Faction levels

Positive Faction consists of a static ladder. As you move up the ladder, you gain greater and greater trust and access to the faction.

1 - 5 Neutral: Small favors, light work

6 - 10 Well disposed: More likely to actually risk something for you, willing to hide you from the law

11 - 15 Friendly: Will risk resources to help.

16 - 20 Ally: Willing to offer significant resources to help out, will fight and die for.

20+ Membership: Factions of more than 20 are reserved only for those who have actual membership, and usually imply some leadership position within the faction.

Negative Faction works similarly, but on a broader scale. Negative faction is a factor of your advancement, which is a reflection of how powerful you are.

At 1/2 your total Advancement, a faction will be unfriendly. They won't go out of their way to hinder you, but will refuse any requests for help without serious payment (200% of the regular cost for that "favor").

At a level equal to your total advancement, a faction will be hostile. They won't proactively seek to harm you, but will take any opportunity to hurt or destroy you.

at twice your level of advancement, the faction is openly at war with you. They will offer rewards for your capture or death, and often send agents to seek you out and kill you.

-------------

That's a basic rundown of faction. I'm not too settled on the rules, and I would like to see what happens in play, but I imagine that faction pools will result in a far more political gaming style, as people jockey for faction with a particular group.

That and I need to come up with a better word for the actual relationship with a faction. Using faction interchangeably with both the "group you have faction with" and the "relationship with a faction" is bound to get confusing at some point.
