i never thought i'd say this, since i really am not a fan but more of an semi-interested onlooker, but madonna's concert really amazed me last night. it's obviously heavily influenced by matthew barney and michel gondry, but it still came thisclose to being an actual work of art. sure, she politicizes too easily -- at times the intent seems to have been culled from a sarah lawrence sophomore's diary -- but it's actually moving and exciting. i hate big arena concerts, and i kind of hate madonna more, but her non-stop energy-emitting tour-de-force last night was inspiring. the design -- from the set to the video projections to the costuming -- is all spot on, of the moment, and really fucking cool. i would have to say, begrudgingly, that it was among the best concerts i have ever seen. i just didn't think i would put madonna on the same list as bjork, wilco, radiohead and annie lennox in central park. but it definitely beat the jacksons victory tour hands-down.
seriously, if you can get tickets -- and they are *good* tickets, because the PA kinda sucked from where we were -- i would definitely urge you to go.
