Ok, I'm finally going to write about something that has been buggin me for a while...I was just too stressed and too busy dealing with it to write about it.

Here's the situation: Our new journalism advisor, Miss Hugli, is a complete control freak. She has taken an authoritarian role in the newspaper and won't listen to a word I have to say. She was angry because I got a group together and put together a newspaper over the summer without her authorization, although when we talked about it last year she thought it was a good idea. I also tried e-mailing her to tell her about the meetings and invite her to come...she claims she never received any e-mail from me. She would also not even look at the work we had done, she simply said, it's not going to happen and that's that, I'm not going to argue with you on this.

She is absolutely not the right person for the job if she is punishing me for taking the initiative to do a paper over the summer, without class credit, but simply because I wanted to because of my love of journalism and because I want to put out a great newspaper this year. Most teachers would love to have students who
do work without even being asked...but because they want to, because they have a passion for it. She told me, "Kimberly, you have an S in citizenship right now and if you can't prove to me that you are a good leader, then you will not be editor-in-chief." That shows me that she is not willing to work with me, she is not willing to compromise, she wants everything to go her way, and if it doesn't she will hold my grades over my head.

And furthermore, what do you consider a good leader? Is a good leader someone who will do whatever the advisor wants for fear of their grades or do they fight for what they think is right so they can put out something that they will be proud of, something that represents the students?

On top of all of this, she has absolutely no clue what she is doing. She has no journalism experience and she is a history teacher for god sakes. And even though she doesn't know what she is doing, she won't listen to the people who have more experience so she can learn from us...instead she wants to have complete control over us. And she won't take advice from Thomason either, who she wants completely out of the picutre. She was even mad at us for going to him for advice when she wasn't available.

Crowder recruited Hugli from Lewis last year and recruited her for the newspaper this year so she'll be able to control her. She wasn't able to control Mr. Thomason who stood up for his students and that is why she removed him from his position. She basically wants us to put out a staff newsletter where we just say how great our school is and how wonderful the administration is and I'm not willing to do that.

The situation is just so fucked up, I don't want to be stressed out all year, so I'm starting my own paper. I think we will call it the underground railroad and my code name shall be Helga the Destroyer.

It just sucks that I've worked so hard for the past three year to get the position of Editor-in-Chief, and now all of that is ruined by a bad advisor.

Love, Helga

p.s. Mr. Good called my house today! A little scary, but he is on my side in the situation and he doesn't want me to quit(cause he knows the paper is fucked without me and Emily) but my mind is pretty much made up. It's kinda nice to know that you are important enough for the VP to beg you not to quit though.
