OMG AVATAR

Okay, I admit, I was smitten by the movie.  SMITTEN.  So much that I've actually started learning the Na'vi language on top of Japanese (and everything else ( Read more... )

LOL I had the opposite reaction to the movie. I was downright offended. The Indian in me was not happy, the woman in me was not happy, the nerd in me was not happy, the cognitive-thinking, sentient human being in me was not happy.

Which really wouldn't be a problem, except the movie, James Cameron, the PR was so full itself. All "this will REDEFINE movies".

Kay, watevs. If you want to be a purdy fanboy fantasy, then be that, but don't go acting like your this amazingly insightful, original and revolutionary piece of film, cause...no. I'm all for mindless self-indulgence, but not at all for pretension.

[And I still have nightmares about Sigourney Weaver. Both because of her terrible performance (which may have had as much to do with the directing as it did the terrible, godawful dialogue) and her creepy-ass looking avatar.]

(Vexen icon because the Na'vi are blue, and so is his shield. SHH. Don't question it...)

Now I'm all sadface ;_; I don't see how one could find it offensive. I thought it was really cool...

The Na'vi are blatant representatives of Native American Indians and African Americans (only, instead of being actually based of of those cultures, they are based off of the stereotypes of those cultures), and the whole point of the movie was that colonialism sucked, and the environment is kewl. Except that stereotyping in order to get this across is offensive. Whether positive or negative, they dehumanize a race ( ... )

I respectfully disagree-- nothing could POSSIBLY be as bad as Twilight. ;)

Trust me, I only mean in a metaphorical sense. Avatar is groundbreaking in it's visuals (my dislike of them is purely subjective), so it doesn't half-ass those. What I meant is that so many people have told me not to take offense to it, to just shut off my brain and enjoy it, because for some reason as long as a movie is pretty and cool the rest of its flaws don't matter, especially those that are racially insensitive. Just like Twilight (though with Twilight it's more the rampant sexism).

I haven't seen Avatar yet, and I don't approve of movies that are more "Ooh, look at the pretty explosions" than anything, but I do think that there's such a thing as reading too much into something. It's like all the drama that surrounded Jar Jar Binks (Star Wars) or those ridiculous twins (Transformers)... people were taking offense left and right, claiming racial stereotype, but I don't see it ( ... )

No offense to you, but I have seen the movie, and there are no light hints; JC beats his theme over the veiwers heads at every turn, completely lacking subtly, and frankly I take no issue with using pre-existing people as references, but Avatar doesn't reference the people, but the *stereotypes* of those people ( ... )
