I went to the International Education office in my school asking about the Egypt dismayt study abroad trip.  Much to my dismay, they had cancelled the trip due to lack of interest.  Which really surprised me, I mean, I expected the thing to be swarming with participants, but no such luck ( Read more... )

It is very important to know what state you are, as well as the city. I't definitely Not the same thing to go to mexico city than going to Chiapas. It's easy to get killed or kidnapped on either one, but if you go to chiapas, be aware that it's something of a state-in-war.
If your school sends you to Sonora or anywhere close to Ciudad Juarez, I have to tell you Don't Come. Even we don't like to go there. Hell, no one wants to go there. People get beheaded, shot; women especially get murdered.
I'm happy that you want to and have the opportunity to come here, but I have to warn you that perhaps you shouldn't. This isn't an easy place to live on. You have to be street smart, even crossing a street can get you killed. You can cross wherever you want at any point you want, with incoming cars or not, only you can know if you'll make it or not. Just last week I crossed at the place you supposedly Should cross, on a red light, and a taxi sped right through the red light and damn near killed me. Two women died on the corner near my school back when I was studying, buses hit them. That happens all the time.
If you can still change your plans, I'd say maybe you should go to italy, to a big city in italy, that might be easier.
I'm not saying that mexico is a horrible place, it isn't. I love it here, the people are very warm, loving and helping. But the main difference is that this isn't a first world. If you don't work hard and have a lot of studies, you STARVE here. And if you don't have studies it's either working at a factory 12hrs a day for 6 dollars a day, or robbing. People are merely desperate, and most don't hesitate to do something that is convenient to them even if it hurts someone else.
Laws are optional here, yeah, you can jump over them when it's convenient and easy, but that also means that others can, and won't hesitate to do so.
Remember how I said that everything is possible on mexico? It is. Yes, you can drink all you want at any age you want, go anywhere you want at any time, go drugs, whatever you can think of. But it also means that if you go drinking, you might end up dead. Anything is perfectly possible.
Also, about being american. NEVER say that you're American. At best, you'll be answered with "Yeah? So am I" You are NOT american, you are a citizen of the United States of America. The whole continent is named America. We don't like when you try to aproppiate the name of the continent. It's arrogant and insulting.
Also, be prepared for the fact that people don't like americans all that much. I'm not insulting you, but let me tell you that back when 9/11 happened, one of the most important news shows on tv wasn't talking about how sad it was and how terrible it was. What he said was "Wow, look at that. Someone has broken through the United States' defense and actually attacked them! We never thought that would happen to those bastards who have done so many horrible things around the world." I'm not saying that it wasn't a horrible thing to happen, I'm just saying that the world doesn't thinks of the United States the way you might think they do. For all the freedom of information you have, I've heard that there is a lot of censoring out there about how the politics of the united states affect other countries, not only mexico, but europe, asia, etc.
Really, maybe you should go to a country that's nice and easier to live in.
