The twins spent a good few minutes running around outside without any point to their game before the reality of the situation caught up with them. They didn't figure out until they actually saw it that the light and heat was coming from the sun, which was both hotter than they expected and not nearly as hot as they'd feared. But if the sun was there, that meant that there was something wrong. They shouldn't be able to go outside--the glass of the windows should have been too hot to touch.
Aaron and Zeke turned back to the building behind them. It was strange to see, to think about. That was what the outside of a building looked like, silhouetted against the sky--it seemed familiar somehow, but they'd been born decades after the cataclysm that forced humanity into the compounds. They'd never seen anything like this.
Zeke reached for Aaron's hand. "Back inside?" Aaron nodded, taking his twin's hand, and they teleported into the hallway just past their room.
The hallway was nothing like the stark white environment of the compound they'd grown up in; rather, it was warm and homey like if their living quarters were spread out into a whole residential compound. No one could afford something like this. The twins let go of each others' hands to race down the hallway, not bothering to quiet their steps, wondering who and what they'd find in this strange place.
