"He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not..." Said a timid boy, plucking away at the petals of a daisy. He was a scrawny, dark skinned boy sitting in a pleasant meadow of petite flowers.
So what's so special about this boy? The way he giggles at the lamest jokes? The way his dorky smile sends you to high heaven? The way his innocence and naiveness strikes you as odd? Okay, so maybe Kim Ryeowook is special. But he sure doesn't believe that.
"Wookie!" A familiar voice called from the entrance of Ryeowook's sanctuary, or what he calls his "Meadow of Solitude".
Ryeowook looked behind him and smiled. He embraced the older boy running towards him and hugged tightly.
"What are you doing here Donghae?" Ryeowook asked, tilting his head to the side cutely. Donghae felt his heart pulse heavily.
"Oh, umm, that Siwon guy arrived at your aunt and uncle's bakery!" Donghae said. Ryeowook instantly grabbed Donghae's wrist and tugged him out of the meadow, through the wilderness that stomached it, and towards the city. They galloped through the majestic streets of Florence, passing by the local coffee shops and clothing stores in which Ryeowook's good friends worked.
Soon, the two arrived at Ryeowook's family bakery. The sign that hung above the door read "Seoul Delight". Ryeowook and Donghae peered through the large window and saw a tall boy with short glossy hair, bending over to observe the delicacies in the class counter.
"What are you waiting for? Go!" Donghae said excitedly and shoved Ryeowook into the bakery.
"Wookie! You're back!" Ryeowook's uncle Dimitri greeted with a hearty laugh. Ryeowook smiled shyly as Siwon approached him.
"Hi my name's Siwon. Choi Siwon." Siwon held out his hand.
"I'm Ryeowook." He introduced. Their hands met and gave a tight squeeze. Ryeowook felt the squeeze emanate through his body which sent tingles down his spine.
"Are you Korean too?"
"Yeah."
"Cool! It's not every day you meet another Korean in Italy."
The two stepped out of the bakery and started on a light stroll around the block.
"So what are you doing here in Florence, Ryeowook?"
"I came to study pastry making at Florence Culinary Arts Academy. Plus my aunt and uncle own a bakery here. You?"
"I came to get a degree in Italian. Just a few more weeks and I get my degree!"
"Cool!"
An awkward silence befell the two upon their afternoon stroll.
"Oh I forgot to buy some pastries from your uncle's shop." Siwon said suddenly and rushed back. Ryeowook followed. Siwon's eyes darted from cake to cake the instant he walked in.
"I suggest the Rouge a la Ryeo. A layer of sweet bread on a layer of chocolate on another layer of sweet bread topped with a strawberry surrounded in dabs of whipped cream."
"Let me guess, you made it?" Siwon pointed at Ryeowook playfully. He nodded shyly. "Then I'll take one." Siwon handed Dimitri the money and he handed Siwon the cake.
Siwon sliced a small part off the edge with a plastic pastry fork and slid it into his mouth. Ryeowook watched intently as Siwon savored the flavor. Siwon sighed heavily and Ryeowook's heart sank.
"I'll take ten more." Siwon said suddenly. Ryeowook's heart fluttered again and a thousand butterflies tickled his chest. Siwon smiled briefly and headed towards the door. He slipped a piece of paper into Ryeowook's chest pocket and walked away with a bagful of Rouge a la Ryeos.
Everything just became a blur of sunshine and rainbows.
Ryeowook shuffled his feet out of the bakery and walked slowly towards the apartment building in which he lived with his aunt Luna and uncle Dimitri. Just as he was about to walk up the dimly lit flight of stairs, a loud voice called from the second floor.
"Wookie!" Ryeowook looked up into the hollow ceiling. It was Donghae waving his arms ecstatically. Ryeowook raced up the steps and approached Donghae who was waiting by his apartment door. "So? What happened?" Donghae asked quick and incoherently.
"Siwon gave me this piece of paper." Ryeowook slowly unfolded the little sticky note. Before he could take a peek at what was inside, Donghae snatched it away and took a peek in the privacy of his imaginary bubble. In seconds, Donghae was jumping and hopping around like a little crazed fangirl. Donghae shoved the little scrap of paper into Ryeowook's chest. Ryeowook took a little peek.
"OH MY GOD! NO FREAKING WAY! HE GAVE ME HIS NUMBER!" Ryeowook screamed and charged into his relatives' apartment, through the hallways, and into his room, throwing himself onto his bed and squealing into his pillow.
You know how you like someone to the point of thinking about them during class and getting in trouble for not paying attention? Or how you come within five feet of someone you like and your heart pounds so hard it's uncomfortable? Or how you talk to that special someone and worry so much about saying something stupid that you actually do say something stupid? All these emotions jumbled together plus a clash of childlike admiration would describe Ryeowook's heart at the moment.
Donghae came scuttling into Ryeowook's room and sat on Ryeowook who was lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling in disbelief. Donghae sat at Ryeowook's pelvis innocently.
"You happy?" Donghae asked looking down at Ryeowook's peaceful face. Ryeowook nodded and smiled. Donghae leaned down and kissed Ryeowook's cheek gently. Ryeowook felt the warm moist pressure of Donghae's lips, making his heart beat faster than ever, faster than seeing Siwon topless at the gym every Tuesday.
"What was that for?" Ryeowook asked as calmly as he could, repressing the excitement that rushed through him.
"Ten years of friendship. Happy anniversary." He replied.
"You even keep track of friendship anniversaries?" Ryeowook chuckled.
"Yup." Donghae replied. No, just ours because I love you so much.
"Aww, I wish we were brothers, You're such a good friend."
"Me too." I wish we were lovers. "I gotta get going now. My mom's expecting me to help her with dinner."
"Sure thing Dong-baby! Same time tomorrow?" Ryeowook asked.
"Yup!" Donghae replied and flew out the door.
Donghae leaned his back against the wall outside the apartment. He felt a throbbing squeeze around his chest. His knees felt weak and he fell to the ground slowly. A tear fell from his eye, then another, then another, until it became a thunderstorm. Donghae buried his face in the depths of his brown sweater sleeves. I wish I was the only one in your eyes, Ryeowook.
