Latta House Burning

you probably won't see much of this on the evening news, but you will see some guy at Disney World mad that his child was punched by Tigger and Tigger won't apologize without his tiger costume on....

priorities.....

Just near Cameron Village off Oberlin Rd in Raleigh sits a huge parcel of land with a late 19th century house on it.....The Latta House (history below)

http://www.lattahouse.org/

Saturday afternoon, Stacy and I were leaving her house, across from the Latta House, when we saw a construction materials fire in the yard across the street at a new house being built beside the Latta House. She was concerned about the fumes from the plastics, I was concerned about the fire spreading to other houses. I mentioned that it could spread to the trees and then to the grounds of the Latta House b/c of the row of trees that separated the two houses. Both points were valid and dangerous, so she called the fire department and when we returned later in the afternoon we saw that a fire truck had extinguished the flames. Not 36 hours later we awoke (at 5am this morning) to emergency lights and smoke everywhere. The Latta House was on fire. Not from a fire that spread from another lot but it seems from the house itself. It was engulfed in flames from all sides. I grabbed my camera a bit too late to catch the fireballs that we saw, but was able to catch some of the morning's events.

The history of the building is amazing, esp. the fact that it is one of the few remnants of black history in Raleigh.

It is sad to see this site go up in flames, esp. since developers will come in and parcel 8 plots on the land, new 3 story houses with vinyl siding im sure. Everything on the street is one story wood.....

also attached is an image clip from my last film that I finished a month or so ago that I filmed some on the Latta property...such a gorgeous plot of land
