So, I just saw "The Taming of the Shrew", and while I would ordinarily not like it (some may say that it's a satire of a patriarchal, money-obsessed society, but if you take it at face value it's all about how women should submit and all that rot) the version I saw was really, really different.
It was set in a more modern Italy, and upstage, stretching from one wing to another was a gigantic store window, complete with swinging doors and a gigantic billboard of a woman in a bathing suit. Anyway, the whole Katharine-Petruchio relationship had a few hints of a dom/sub relationship, which was really interesting-not him crushing her spirit, but her needing it or something. I don't know; there were hints at times that Kate liked it-although not all the time, of course. Who would like being starved, etc.? But the point holds.
Also, by the end, Kate and Petruchio had started giggling together, which kind of implied that it was all this big joke that they were both in on. I can't really describe it; the sets, costumes, directing and acting were all really, really great, and it was a lot less "women must needs obey, NOW" than it usually is.
And it made me really, really want to write fanfic based on it.
See, my first thought was to do a crossover with P!atD and FOB, which happen to be my latest fic obsessions. (Oh, shush, music snobs.) But then I thought, well, don't just do it because you've got a new fandom. I mean, you were just recently obsessed with Popslash, weren't you?
So then I came upon the idea of doing a crossover with *Nsync/NSYNC/whatever. (Again, shush, music snobs.) Which would actually be really easy-Lance would be Kate, Chris would be Petruchio, Justin/JC would be Bianca and Lucentio would be...someone. I'd figure it out. Lou Perlman would be the money-obsessed father who sells his daughters for the greatest dowry.
(Of course, no matter which fandom I choose, the ending will be revised and less submissive and obedient. Because, really. I scoff at the idea that a proper woman should be meek and biddable.)
But the reason I wanted to do P!atD and FOB in the first place was that for some reason, the sets made me think of it. Also, some of the characters made me think of the guys from Panic!
Of course, the plot would have to be changed around a little. The character who most reminded me of Brendon Urie was Petruchio's manservant, who was played very bouncy and slightly gay. But who, then, would Ryan be?
Well, there are many, many options for this. I did some thinking, and I eventually decided that I wanted Patrick to be Kate, and Pete would be Petruchio (even the name fits!) Brendon could, of course, be Lucentio...but every time the manservant, Grumio, appeared onstage, I thought, "No, no, that's definitely Brendon right there." Especially when he kissed a random guy onstage.
I wanted Ryan to be Bianca, who always has all the men swooning around her. But it would have to be a different Bianca, less biddable, and how would she fall in love with Brendon, our hapless manservant? And where would Spencer and Jon fit in?
...Well. I had a lot of time to ponder this during intermission, so... Spencer is Ryan's best friend, pretending to be a suitor so he can make sure Ryan doesn't get forced to marry a licentious, leering, rich creep. But then Jon comes to town, spurred to marry by his rich father. While Spencer and Jon are pretending to court Ryan, they fall in love with each other, and Ryan may end up forced to marry some random creepy guy.
Pissed off at his dad, Ryan runs away to Patrick and Pete, who are living together semi-blissfully (albeit with a couple arguments every now and then, because both men are working on taming each other), meets Brendon, everyone falls in love and there you have it, with maybe a few humorous mishaps between that and the happily ever after.
I just can't decide which story to write... *moans* Any votes?
