Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

All things told, Nick had to admit that the sudden development of an amusement park dominating the island was a pretty cool one. Years past had seen all sorts of violence and creepy things and overall weirdness around this time of year, and so Nick was thrilled that this year, the worst thing that happened, so far, was getting stuck on that awful ( Read more... )

"Make her stop," Karen murmured, knowing full well Utica would probably listen only to her, and she had no desire to leave the bed or even give anything her full attention when she didn't have to. It was Halloween, that should count for something. "Utica, shut up."

She only got an answering whimper in return, which eventually turned into a second low growl adding to the first.

"Utica, hush," Nick said. He groped around behind him for a spare pillow, something to toss in the dog's direction to distract her from whatever it was she was growling at. His fingers found the edge of a pillow, and he lifted it up, swinging it over the bed and in the general direction of the dog.

The pillow made a soft, wet squish noise as it hit something.

"What was that?" Nick mumbled, squeezing his eyes shut and trying to figure out what could be going squish in their hut.

Considering most of their days blended together in the same routine, anything new in the hut was a definite cause for concern. Especially when it happened to be one of those days where nothing was normal. At all.

"Go look," Karen replied, suddenly frozen and not wanting to open her eyes. She wasn't a kid anymore, but the whole 'If I can't see it, it can't see me' defense seemed really great at the moment.

Squish was not a normal sound. Figuring that maybe Utica had done something uncharacteristic and dragged in a dead bird or something, Nick opened his eyes and sat up, expecting the worst.

What he wasn't expecting was a large SpongeBob SquarePants standing in the middle of the floor, growling menacingly at him. SpongeBob -- who just the night before was a large, cuddly toy that Utica already appeared to enjoy toying on -- now advanced slowly towards the bed. The thing was about the same size at it was before, only now it appeared to actually be a sponge, with what looked like blood oozing out of its pores.

"Holy shit," Nick yelped, immediately fully awake. He sat straight up in bed and looked for the nearest weapon. Somehow, he didn't think that a growling. bloody SpongeBob was just there to say hello.
