Even before being placed onto the Council, Nick tried to get to know everyone in the lab. He didn't always succeed, however, and he was trying to rectify that, now that he was looking out for the lab in a more official capacity

"Black with lemon," Nikola replied without looking up from his work. Nikola pushed his emtpy cup across the bench towards the man, reaching for another chart and examining it intently. When the presence didn't disappear Nikola looked up from his work and scowled. Nikola had noticed the man before but he'd always assumed he was the tea boy. Really, there was no reason for everyone else to be in the lab when Nikola was working. "Yes? I believe the kitchen is that way. Wait, you're not one of the apprentices Helen was talking about were you?"
Nick cocked his head to one side. He was used to working with strange coworkers in the lab. Hodges, after all, was strange enough to pretty much take the cake.
"Uh, no," he said, "not an apprentice, sorry 'bout that." He let a little bit of the down home Texas charm creep back into his voice. Not that he thought it would do much good, but sometimes it was helpful. "No, sir, my name's Nick Stokes, I work here, and I'm the representative on the council for the lab. I've seen you working around here a lot, figured I'd just come over and introduce myself, see what you're working on."
"Really you're on the council?" Nikola asked after he looked their- his council representative up and down critically before sighing. Really first Will now this, next they were going to tell him Doogie Howser was in charge of the Clinic. "I'm trying to stop the degradation of the celluar wall and platelets from grouping which is causing organ failure and will cause eventual death. A sad little side effect from radiation poisoning caused by a time dilation device. And I'm Tesla, Nikola Tesla."
Nick took a slow breath. Hodges, while a bit odd, didn't usually talk down to him. What would Grissom do? he wondered, and then settled on patience and pretending like he wasn't annoyed, yet.
And also, there was the fact that the man talking down to him happened to be Nikola Tesla. Nick may not have been the best student, and he certainly didn't know much about stopping radiation poisoning, but he knew who Tesla was.
"As in, the Nikola Tesla?" he asked, realizing as soon as he said it that he probably wasn't doing much to reinforce his role as a semi-authority figure.
