First-person sample: I shrugged into my blue pea coat and bent my head against the heavy rain that fell around me. Angela warned me that it rained a lot in upstate Washington, but she didn’t mention that it rained constantly. Every since I got off my plane in Seattle yesterday it had rained like the Great Flood was coming. I half expected to see an arc pass me by with two of every type of animal on it and a bearded man on top.I clicked my heels together, the cheery yellow flats looking painfully optimistic. If the sun didn’t shine soon, my skin would become paler from lack of vitamins and my hair would turn into one big giant triangle. My older brother stood next to me, a knowing grin slapped onto his face. I scowled up at him and he crossed his eyes at me. I resisted the urge to stick my tongue out at him and scanned the parking lot for a familiar red VW Bug.
Third-person sample: A tall girl with curly blond hair stood hunched under an umbrella, a look of misery on her pretty face, as a slightly older boy teased her. It was evident even from afar that she did not like the rain. Her bright yellow shoes and navy blue pea coat contrasted with the grey landscape around her. I hope Angela gets here soon. I may drown in this weather. I can see it now. “Girl Drowns Waiting for her Cousin at the Local Airport.” I’ll be on TV and newspapers everywhere. What a story that’ll be to tell your grandchildren. Her expression visibly perked up when a red VW Bug pulled up in front of her and a tall girl with long chestnut hair got out and hugged her.
“Ange, you didn’t mention how much it rained here,” Summer scolded, hugging her laughing cousin. “I thought you meant that it rained occasionally. I should have brought my arc.” She smiled as her brother loaded her suitcases in the trunk and hopped into the back seat. She followed him into the car and placed her hands over the A/C vents, which at the moment were emitting warm air. She let a pleased sound and fastened her seat belt.
“Watch out, small town Washington, Summer de Villiers is in town,” she grinned as her cousin pulled out of the parking lot as U2’s Beautiful Day filled the car. Talk about ironic.
