(past)

Kyungsoo’s father passed away, the morning of his graduation ceremony, from a rare terminal illness.

While everyone else in his class was enjoying the attention and affection from their families, Kyungsoo sat there staring at his cell phone waiting for the ceremony to begin. His mother was still in the early stages of grief to even consider her only son’s high school graduation.

“You alright there Kyungsoo?” a familiar warm voice asked him curiously.

Jongin’s beautiful dark brown eyes stared at him and Kyungsoo tried not to get irritated. Kyungsoo refused to let Jongin out of all people worry about him. The popular all-star soccer player staring at him with concern and it made his heart want to melt. Those kissable soft lips and his jawline made Kyungsoo envious as well as attracted to him.

“Hello? Earth to Kyungsoo!” Jongin teased poking at Kyungsoo’s forehead before repeating his question. “Are you alright? You look a little bit down. It’s graduation. You should be happy!”.

After completing his sentence, he sat on top of Kyunsoo’s desk casually letting his legs dangle free.

“Yeah, I am fine. I just have a lot of things on my mind,” Kyungsoo answered playfully pushing Jongin off his desk.

Jongin landed on the ground with a loud thud causing his classmates around him as well as their families to laugh. Bathing in the attention sunlight, Jongin got up from the ground and shrugged it looking at Kyungsoo with a devilish grin. Without warning he walked closer to the young male and pinched his cheeks making baby noises.

“Kyungsoo, oh Kyungsoo! Don’t be like that. Tell those things in your head to stop for once! It’s graduation! Not an exam and even if it was an exam you’ll always ace it!” Jongin said playfully.

Kyungsoo tried hard not to slap Jongin’s soft hands pinching his cheeks and looked up at the male. Their gazes met each other’s and for a second his heart beat started to pound faster and faster. Almost everything in the room stopped. For almost a second Kyungsoo did not have to worry anymore. He did not have to worry about his father’s funeral. He did not have to worry about his mother’s current mental state. He did not have to worry about how he was going to attend college. He did not even have to worry about the graduation that would be happening shortly. Everything was fixated on Jongin’s warm brown eyes that seemed to have distracted his anxious thoughts. Jongin took this opportunity to lean closer to the male and kiss his forehead causing Kyungsoo’s cheeks to blush bright red.

“I’ll see you out there!” Jongin said patting Kyungsoo on top of the head and walked out the classroom.

Kyungsoo paused for a moment taking what had just happened to him. Did Jongin just kiss on the forehead? Why was he feeling all warm and flustered? The main question Kyungsoo was hung up about was why on earth is he still feeling this way.

Despite Jongin not being in the same class as him, he was still part of the high school graduation ceremony.

Kyungsoo patiently waited for almost an hour and a half before his name was called. There were no applauses or people cheering for him like his classmates except for one. He turned to look and there was Jongin with his diploma in his right hand waving it around shouting his name. One of the students had to tap him because he stopped midway walking up the steps. The chancellor smiling at him shook his hand and gave him his diploma before ushering him off the stage.

The ceremony took approximately two more hours with singers from the high school chorus and performances by the dance and hip hop groups. The chancellor ended the ceremony with fireworks in the background and the high school students tossed their graduation caps in the air. For some reason Kyungsoo could not believe that he had finished high school. The four years flew by so rapidly that he was unable to comprehend all that had happened. He was new to this high school after his dad was promoted and he barely made any friends since most of the kids were cliquey. His only friend was the transfer student Jongin who not only became popular in school but he was the reason Kyungsoo played soccer. That’s how Kyungsoo was able to adapt to high school.

Afterwards everyone split like ants and went towards their families. Kyungsoo’s mother ended up calling him, apologizing for not attending his graduation. She promised to make it up to him which he knew were lies because those were the same recycled lines that was his mother’s go-to to make her feel better. The feeling that he had been repressing all day hit him and he did not realize that he had that amount of emotion running through him. He could feel his salty tears burning his eyes as it sneaked up on him. Before long people started to notice him crying but he did not need that right now. He refused to consider their fake pity at him. They would not be able to truly understand how much this hurts him. His father was battling the illness just perfectly but a week before his graduation and everything turned into flames. His heart was beating fast because now he was running to his classroom. He wanted to grab his items and just leave. Kyungsoo was determined to leave for college and never come back.

As he was grabbing his backpack he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to the right and he saw Jongin staring at him with his puppy dog eyes.

“Kyungsoo… are you seriously okay?” Jongin asked in concern.

“I will be,” Kyungsoo said trying his best not to cry in front of his best friend.

“Come here,” Jongin asked with open arms and Kyungsoo shook his head.

“I just want to be alone,” Kyungsoo whispered his voice cracking halfway through his sentence.

“Come on,” Jongin said this time not waiting for Kyungsoo’s approval.

Kyungsoo felt a pair of strong arms wrap around his waist and then Jongin’s sculpted chest rested on his back.

“Whatever is making you upset for the past month, I hope it gets better,” Jongin said softly hugging Kyungsoo tighter. The smaller male could not help but give into the affection and sobbed. Jongin and Kyungsoo stayed in this position for some time before Jongin’s parents called for him. Jongin broke free from Kyungsoo causing the male to let out a whimper.

“Here… I know that you are going very far away for college so here. This is a note! I placed it in your diary on the last page so you can read it whenever you want to. I am going to miss you,” Jongin said hugging Kyungsoo in the front this time and retracted to kiss him on the lips.

The kiss was gently and soft and Kyungsoo wished desperately for it to continue.

It didn’t.

Jongin left Kyungsoo and went to look for his family who had been calling him up and down the hallway. Kyungsoo stood there speechless.

(present)

Kyungsoo, now 26 years old, owns a bakery called Bonjour Luna in New York City. He became incredibly successful appearing on interviews as well as magazine catalogues of the top 100 pastry chefs in the world. He owned a condo and his memories of high school did not surface until he received a phone call from his mother.

“Hey mom, what is the matter?” Kyungsoo asked with concern as he stared at the television screen showing the news as well as the weather report map.

“Honey, could you mind helping me clean and possibly sell somethings in the house? I want to move to a smaller house,” Kyungsoo’s mother asked sweetly.

“Of course! When do you need me to be there?” Kyungsoo asked turning off the television and started to walk towards his room finding his suit case.

“Sometime this week would work well! Thank you honey,” his mother answered and hung up the phone.

It was Wednesday when he arrived in his small town.

There were new neighborhoods being constructed as well as new residential areas being established. He could not help but admire his drive to his house as he saw how commercialized his sleepy little town had become.

When he arrived, he was greeted with boxes and his mother was digging through a lot. It took them approximately two hours to organize the boxes and even more time to look through them.

“This is your stuff that I kept in your room from high school…” his mother said handing him a big box and she looked at the clock. “Would you mind organizing your stuff so that I can get whatever you do not want to charity?” his mother asked.

Kyungsoo nodded his head and kissed his mother’s cheek. Eight years his mother was slowly starting to move on. He was proud that she stopped hoarding the items that had no value anymore.

He looked at his box and then pulled a bunch of stuff. Eventually Kyungsoo found his journal the small black book.

It was half past midnight when he almost finished reading his journal entries. There were entries recording his thoughts and emotions from the beginning of the school year to the end. He did not realize how much this had helped him cope throughout his four years in high school. It allowed him to remember nasty bullies on the soccer team that would threaten to kick him out if he refused to comply with them. However, he would end his journal entries with his thoughts about Jongin and he could not believe that Jongin would have this much impact in his experience of high school.

He finishes his reading his journal before he finds a thing letter. He looks at it and on the back, it had Jongin’s sloppy signature. Taking a moment to appreciate it, his thoughts start to wander around. He wonders if Jongin would still be here or if he had moved on. Jongin’s family owned a local bakery therefore he did not need to college considering how the business would be handed to him.

The memories of how Jongin kissed him on the lip caused him to feel a knot in his stomach as well as a feeling of bittersweet. Kyungsoo let out a big sigh before opening the letter and stared at the content. He let out an awkward laugh considering the content of the note. He felt extremely embarrassed remembering his crush telling him about read the letter.

It read.

“I will be waiting” - KJI

There was Jongin’s number attached to this. Kyungsoo’s finger gently traced the digits and without thinking twice he pulled out his cell phone and dialed that number. He did not know if this was still Jongin’s number or if the other man would want to even talk to him. It had been approximately eight years since he received this and since then he did not make any attempts at contacting Jongin. He was too foolish back then giving up too easily on his best friend and crush.

He pressed the cell phone close to his ear.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

“Hello?” a deep voice on the other line asked.

“Hey… is this Jongin?” Kyungsoo asked nibbling on his bottom lip.

“This is. May I ask who is calling?” Jongin asked curiously.

Kyungsoo removed the phone and took a few breaths. He’s twenty-six years old but he still feels like the high school days where he would feel flustered and his heart would beat too fast to be normal.

“It’s Kyungsoo,” he replied.

There was a brief silence on the other line before he could hear Jongin clearing his throat.

“It’s been forever! How have you been buddy?” Jongin asked enthusiastically. Kyungsoo was baffled at Jongin’s reaction to him contacting him after such a long time.

“It’s been well! I own a bakery in New York City now,” Kyungsoo replied.

“Well that’s good! I must run my family’s bakery in town. Speaking of which when are you going to be in town?” Jongin asked still enthusiastically.

“I am actually in town. This might sound bad but I finally read the note you gave to me in high school! I totally forgot about it until now when I read it,” Kyungsoo replied sheepishly.

“Well you must come to my bakery. After all I have been waiting for a while now,” Jongin said.

“When can I come over?” Kyungsoo asked.

“Whenever you can,” Jongin said, causing Kyungsoo to feel all warm on the inside.

And that’s now there love story finally began.
