Ha! This is spooky. In real life three decades ago in Strategic Air Command the Colonel's name was, indeed, Bolton. And you are absolutely right, these two are cut from the same bolt of cloth. Arrogant, criminally incompetent martinets, who go out of their way to make their subordinates' life miserable, while at the same time driving their noses up the asses of their superiors.
The whole "Military Intelligence" thing is summed with a guy like the Kernel. And when I say "Kernel" I mean that can of corn who needed some 3 star General to open his lid and dump his rancid contents down the garbage disposal.
I wonder if he actually could have your rank reduced? The power some of these guys thought they had sometimes exceeded the actual, and they just counted on the threat to be enough... not saying you should have challenged him though! The response was perfect.
Much like the police force, people go into the military for various reasons. Some go because they want to help protect the country. Others go because there is an opportunity to boost the ego by abusing the underlings that cross their path.
