"It's okay," Simon said, though nothing was. He couldn't stop being polite, though. It was automatic. Mechanic, almost. "My... best friend disappeared."
"I'm sorry too," he replied, turning to face her now, offering a... Well, compassionate was probably the best word for the look he gave her. "For your loss. I saw the list but I forgot."
Simon knew Mercy hadn't asked for an explanation. He also knew there was a very real chance he would vanish too. It was a suicide mission. And maybe someone just needed to know why he was doing it anyway.
"The portals are shut for people who don't live here," he said, smoothing his hair over his forehead. "My girlfriend--"
That was the first time he'd used that word aloud about Alisha. It surprised him into pausing, how it'd that just slipped out like that.
"You're leaving," she said with dismay, which she tried unsuccessfully to hide.
