Too Cool for Facebook

Aug 05, 2010 15:14

I always tell people that I'm too cool for Facebook when they ask if I'm on it. I tell them that I use LJ and that's good enough for me. I haven't posted anything of real substance since or before Bob's death. I think I'm overdue and this is too good to not share.

I've been hearing from the FB users I know that you can find/be contacted by old friends frequently. That was really the only reason I ever contemplated using it. I've been on Classmates for years and for about the last two years, I have reconnected with old friends. That site has been filling the role that FB is to others.

In '08, there must have been some sort of free Gold membership thing going on becuase I could read the guestbook and the private email that was sent to me. My best friend from elementary school had sent a message and we've stayed in contact since.

Last year, I upgraded to Gold membership for $10. In the last month I've been contacted by other close friends from high school and the few years after that I hung around VA. Probably the most unexpected and surreal is that my first girlfriend just contacted me. I haven't seen or talked to her in nearly twenty years. We've been messaging back and forth through the site. She was also a friend/classmate of Bob's. She had just found out that he died and sent her condolences . If anything, it'll be interesting to see what's been going on with her.
