This Day, In 2001...

Sep 11, 2008 16:05

My father was in Washington, DC for winning an aol presidential award and was going to hang out with Steve Case and the bigwhigs for a week. They stayed in a hotel in Virginia that was right across from the pentagon...

They had passed by the spot where the helicopter hit fifteen minutes before it happened.

There was no calls coming in to the call center at all. Everyone got out the televisions and set them up around the call center so that we can see what was happening. A few hours later, they closed all of the AOL call centers due to the extreme lack of calls.

I went, and retrieved my daughter from my friend's house, and stayed over there for a while watching events as they had unfolded. It was definately a day where the events were completely etched into my mind for all time...

And To think that the day it happened, I was taking George Carlin's standpoint, and making fun of the whole thing... Damn, I truly am an ass.

On the day it happened, this was my original posting...

7:48a - Hey, at least everyone in the nation has something new to talk about...
I guess a few hours or so ago a few airplanes crashed into the world trade center buildings... Well, I know how my day is going to be today. This is ALL I am going to hear about from all the yahoos and degenerates that call in today. Woo Hoo. Hey! At least it gives this nation something new to talk about. I know that it is supposed to be a big tragedy or terrorist act, but GOD! It amuses the hell out of me! It's peoples fascination with incedents like this that amuses me. They are shocked, curious, and anguished at the same time. A whole country of people like this over the same incedent amuses me. Don't get me wrong... I am not heartless. I hope that there was not many casualties, I just think that the reaction of the whole country, and the legnth of time that they dwell over it is amusing. Ok? So don't hate me for my views on this...

...fuck, was I really this big of a prick?

By The Way, I am still glad that you, melsywsou, made it through. She was there at ground zero, and will always have a huge amount of respect and love in my eyes.
