I have long claimed that the terrible era of early 2000's rock was the child of Nirvana, and grunge at large.

I am not alone in thinking this.
Now, I won't say that everything by these bands is terrible, or that you have bad taste for liking them, because I think that is a dick thing to do, and their success shows that they are very easy to like. But I will say that I think these bands are absolutely terrible. Also, I think late Offspring should be on the list. (Though I did somewhat like them at the time.) A few bands, in particular Foo Fighters, Audioslave and Switchfoot, I think have made some good stuff.
Anyway, we largely have Kurt Cobain and his self-depreciating lyrics to thank for a terrible era of popular music.
