File #1 [Arrival]

[The communicator has been turned on, and its activation is not accompanied by a declaration of anger or fear, but merely puzzlement.]

Well, this is new. Can’t say I’m not used to smuggling rings shipping people out, but they don’t usually take pains to keep you comfortable. Or leave the door unlocked.

Ship full of crazy people, I'm guessing. I just showed up myself.

Definitely a ship full of crazy people from what I've heard.

What were you doing before you got here?

I got yet to meet most of the crazy ones but I heard they're around.

Oh, mercy. That one's... an interesting story, if you'd believe it. What about you?

You'd be surprised what I believe, and I'm all ears.

[Gunnar's a little suspicious.]

I was investigating a smuggling ring.

Zombie apocalypse variety, then.

Really? So you're a cop-type, huh?

Zombie apocalypse? Where's that happening?

[Sadly, Rochelle, you just moved into 'potentially crazy', but that's because Gunn hasn't been properly inducted onto the boat yet.]

I guess you could say that. I used to be a lawyer, and now I'm an investigator.

Most of the east coast of the U.S. We were just getting out of New Orleans before I pretty much blinked and 'poof'ed here.

... Yeaaah.

[Sigh. Rochelle realizes how crazy it all sounds herself, even though she's been in it the last couple of days. Least she doesn't know the part about Gunn thinking she's nuts.]

Heheh, wow. Like on those CSI shows?

[Well, how she got here is pretty much how he did too. So he can at least validate that in his head, so maybe she's not so crazy.

Don't worry, he's having a bad day and everyone's crazy right now to him.]

Sounds about how I got here. Thought maybe I'd been knocked out, but I don't remember getting knocked out, so.

[Gunnar chuckles.] Not exactly. More like a private investigator.

[It's awriiiiight.]

Like I said, I just BLINKED. Though I got knocked out for half a second with some special... military crap, I don't know.

Oooh.

You were with the military before you got here?

[Even though this Redd guy sounds insane, maybe its a military boat? They might think Gunn is crazy, or something.]

Hey, its pretty fun. I make my own hours, anyway.

Yeah, the military was just flying us out of New Orleans. It's a long story, but... yeah, that.

Lucky. I was an associate producer. Nothing fancy like that yet.

Rochelle, by the way.

I have to say, logistically this makes no sense. I was in Indiana, investigating like I said, and since you said you arrived about the same time as I did... how'd we get to the middle of the ocean? Helicopter?

[It must be the middle. He can't see land anywhere.]

Produced anything I might have seen, then?

My names Gunnar, but Gunn works too.

I'm wondering pretty much the same thing. At least the zombies actually made sense. Chalk it up to infection and mutations and really disgusting shit. The middle-of-the-ocean thing... your guess is as good as mine.

I thought maybe the military took us here, but... there'd be more of us. More from my group. Besides Nick, anyway.

[She sighs and shakes her head.]

Not yet. I'm on the damn bottom rung of that ladder. Not like you wouldn't have seen me somewhere soon if it wasn't for... you know, this.

Well, weird shit aside it's nice to meetcha.

[Zombies make about as much sense as anything, he guesses.]

Military might have stuck around to tell us what was going on, and... honestly, I don't think the military would spare the money to build luxury like this.

Unless they commandeered a cruise ship for survivors of something, but that only works for your explanation, not mine. [No zombies around Gunn!]

That's too bad, then. Maybe we'll get off this boat and you'll get back to your career.

Nice to meet you too under the circumstances.

... Everyone was using what they could get, so a cruise ship would actually make sense. But you're right about everything else--that's what I was thinking.

Maybe. I honestly never thought of what things would be like after getting out of New Orleans much less... whatever this is.

Hey.

Yeah, sorry to say I haven't heard any reports of infection in New Orleans. Still, puzzling. [Government could be suppressing it, giving her story legibility.] Guess I'll have to keep an eye and an ear out.

The whole running, gunning for your life doesn't exactly leave time for forethought, right?

Hey?
