A return to innocence. A return to the days where there was only honesty and dignity, no backstabbing or insecurities. Hell, a day when the insecurities that we all commonly share today never even came to exist. When the sun forced us to put on those cool shades we got from pac sun, just so we could look bad ass in the incoming summer heat. Back when Blink 182 was still “cool” and our only arguments were weather Dude Ranch of Enema of the State was the greatest cd of all time. When all we wanted to do was hang out in the high school parking lot and talk about which girl that walked by was the hottest, and which one of us had the best chance with her. An innocence that embodied us because it was all we had. We knew nothing else. The only pain that we knew came from our moms telling us they wouldn’t give us a ride to the mall. Innocence was not something that came over us, inhaled us, or was grasped by our naïve fingers… but instead, almost hereditary. Back when we threw our caps in the air and hugged each other, and I rode away from that place for the final time.

That night, my family, along with Kevin Harrison’s, went to the Olive Garden. The food was slow. We waited for a long time to sit down. The table was cramped. It was the last time I would be pure. The final night I would be hidden from what my father always told me was a much more grueling time. He never said it to me, but he told me it wouldn’t be easy. And over time, I would see the dark clouds loom over my head, and dimness would consume me. The innocence would finally let go.

Today, I went to work. It was another day of the dim, dark world that ive lived for the past few years. The same thing again… and again... and again. Today was simply another day in my life. I walked to the back door with a bag of garbage, and opened the door. Leaves were blowing throughout the parking lot. The sun grabbed me and pulled me outside, and the darkness that had swallowed me whole spit me out. I heard “Whats My Age Again” on the radio that the guys were listening to. I thought of the beautiful blonde haired girl, and realized I had the best chance with her. I imagined all of us in this parking lot, hanging out… when Brett used to jump off the slope at the bottom of the parking lot and me and Brian Muller would laugh. It made me smile, and for a brief period of time… that innocence was restored to my heart.
