[ Personality ] :
Shirley Fenette is a friend and classmate of Lelouch Lamperouge, the main character of Code Geass, at the school where they both attend called Ashford Academy. One of the most prominent things about her character is her established crush on Lelouch, whom she calls by an affectionate nick name ‘Lulu.’ She even keeps a bunch of pictures of him, in her room, and it’s to the point where most students at the Academy are able to tell-particularly Milly Ashford, the Student Council President, who teases her for it. In fact, her love for him is actually what drives most of her actions throughout the series. She’s quite sensitive about it, though, and doesn’t always react well to the teasing-and in general, she’s just really shy and self-conscious around him. She has trouble working up the courage to even ask him to go see a concert together-which only happens when Lelouch takes the concert tickets accidentally, as he picks up some paperwork from Milly.
The concert tickets themselves actually show the kind of relationship that Shirley has with her father, because they’re a gift from him. She explains how her father sends her these gifts sometimes, not for any particular occasion, but just to keep her spirits up, and it’s clear she very much appreciates the gesture. She admires him a great deal, for simply being who he is: a kind and gentle soul. She wants to please him; even when she was little, she wanted to please him, as shown in a flashback, where she basically tells her father she’s going to marry him, she loves him so much. She is only deterred when her father tells her that someday, she’ll find someone else who will love her like he does, and that it would make him the happiest man in the world. It’s because of this relationship-this bond they share as father and daughter-that his death in the series affects Shirley very strongly. Shirley and her mother are asked to identify his body on that very day of the concert, causing her to be late-a death, caused by the terrorist Zero’s operation at Narita. A death caused by Lelouch himself.
Shirley spends much of the time unaware of Lelouch’s secret identity as Zero-unaware of his intentions, his plan to overthrow his father, the current corrupt ruler, in order to create a world that is safe for his younger sister Nunnally. Shirly unfortunately finds out about all this, however, not long after her father’s death, while she is still grieving. She is still so emotionally broken over her loss that later, when she finally does meet up with Lelouch, having missed the concert, she cries, asking him why it had to happen-pulling him in for a kiss on the lips in the rain, despite how shy she’s been around him. Despite how she hadn’t even come close to mustering up the courage to tell him how she feels, let alone kiss him. Despite how uncharacteristic it is of her, since she even apologizes for it. And her feelings are only complicated more when she learns about how he is Zero. That this is his fault; her precious Lulu, the person she loves.
Shirley is helping Viletta Nu when it happens: a member of the Britainnian Army who was hoping to catch Zero and find out his identity, with her help, since she has her own motives-namely finding out who was responsible for her father’s death. The opportunity for this arises when Lelouch falls unconscious under Zero’s mask, his hand gun exposed. Shirley grabs it, her hands shaking, but when the mask falls off…despite her anger, pain, and suffering, she’s unable to shoot him. She simply stares, horrified and conflicted, her finger still on the trigger. When Viletta shows up afterwards, boasting about the kind of promotion she’ll get for exposing him, however…her love and desire to protect him is so strong, she shoots her instead.
There’s a lot to be said about Shirley’s character here, and her actions regarding this. She is naturally a very forgiving and gentle person (like her father), believing any action, any person can be redeemed. She easily forgives her friends, for example, when they apologize to her for inadvertently cheering on the operation that killed her father, and for cheering on Zero, the one behind it. But she can never seem to forgive herself for her own actions-from shooting Viletta, whom she now thinks is dead, to even small actions like kissing Lelouch in a moment of weakness. Guilt weighs heavily on her conscious, which makes her vulnerable when she runs into Mao, another Geass user who can read minds. In her state of mind, he’s able to trick her into thinking that they both need to atone for their sins; that she and Lelouch should die together, in a tragic, Romeo & Juliet-esque manner.
It’s because of her inner turmoil, how hard she takes both her father’s death and learning Lelouch’s identity as Zero, that Lelouch decides it would be best to wipe all her memories of him, using his mind-control Geass. Before he does it, however, you can clearly hear Shirley scream in protest-showing that she loves him so much, she would rather live with the awful, traumatic memories than forget about him. He gives her no choice in the matter, though, and their relationship starts from scratch…leaving her to fall in love with him all over again.
Even after regaining her memories, remembering what Lelouch has done.
Even to her dying breath, when she is attacked by Rolo for knowing too much and endangering Lelouch-she vows to fall in love with him all over again, no matter how many times he makes her forget.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
In a cast of people who can pilot mechs, control people’s minds, read minds-Shirley is normal. She has no Geass, no outstanding supernatural abilities to speak of, and she is sensitive, not to mention very easily manipulated, as was the case when she ran into Mao. He was able to make her believe that she used her father’s death for her own gain by kissing Lelouch and garnering sympathy, and that she was a horrible person for shooting Viletta, perpetuating her mistaken idea that she is dead. He basically made her feel like she deserved to die right alongside Zero-right alongside Lelouch, and she was prepared to shoot him, too, taking it all very seriously. She does shoot at him, in fact, only narrowly missing.
It’s easy to see how she is swayed by things like love, even without outside influence from a source like Mao. Despite the fact that she admires her father for being a gentle and caring person, her love for him and her suffering at his death almost made her shoot Zero; and upon learning his identity as Lelouch, her love for Lelouch makes her shoot Viletta instead to protect him. Such big, potentially permanent and fatal actions, swayed only by raw emotion.
At the same time, however, Shirley’s emotions can also be her strength. She is strong in the face of the tragedy that befell her family, always putting others’ needs before herself. At her father’s funeral, for instance, her mother emotionally breaks down, during the scene when they are burying him, and Shirley comforts her, even though it’s clear that she’s still struggling emotionally herself. On that same vein, she also reassures her friends, when they apologize for cheering on Zero and worry about her. She’s reassuring them, even though you would really think it would be the other way around. It gets to the point where Milly actually asks if she’s cried yet. In some ways, she understands others’ emotions better than she does her own, which is something that can be seen as a strength, or a weakness: a strength, because it means she can talk to and relate to people more easily; and a weakness, because it means she can’t or won’t take care of herself as well emotionally, depending on people like Lelouch.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
N-none, I don’t think! Just that she’s Lelouch’s #1 fangirl, and will probably stalk him. A-after she gets over the initial shock hahaha I pick the worst canon points…
[ Sample ] :
Shirley really doesn’t know where she is right now. She has no idea why she’s wet, either-she certainly doesn’t remember going swimming any time recently, not with her father’s death weighing so heavily on her mind; and even then, it doesn’t make sense that her clothes would be wet. There’s a whole lot of things she doesn’t know, actually-and then there are some things she wishes she didn’t. And those seem to be the only ones she can focus on, despite being in a place so strange, so far removed from home.
“Lulu… why…?”
And with a sigh, she grabs a towel that she notices from a neatly folded pile on a nearby stand. That’s what you’re supposed to do, when you’re wet…right? So she begins to dry off her face first, as she takes a seat on the bench, trying to gather her thoughts. She’s…pretty sure this isn’t where she’s supposed to be. This isn’t Narita.
“Figures I’d get lost on my way there…”
…though she really has no idea how that happened. All she wanted to do was say goodbye to him. She knew where she was going… or at least that’s what she thought. She simply stares up at the watery sky now; shivering, since water is actually quite cold, but at the same time, kind of fascinated by it all. She bites her lip, briefly wondering if this is just a dream she’s waiting to wake up from.
“So what now…father?”
