CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Appearance:
The first aspect of Sai's appearance, that most notice upon meeting him, is his unusually pale skin tone. Far more pale than the average person, he can appear almost sickly looking. However, his head of mostly short, jet-black hair makes the colour of his skin seem all the more fair. While his hair is kept quite short at the back, he has slightly longer bangs that can usually be seen hanging over his "Leaf Village" forehead protector. It's by no means a unique style where he comes from. His eyes, as dark in colour as his hair, lack a certain light behind them that you would find in most other people. He may smile, he read in a book once that it's the best way to get out of a tight situation, but his eyes will remain emotionless. This goes for many of his 'expressions'. His face may portray a strong emotion, while behind the mask he feels nothing at all.
Sai carries himself with an amount of confidence. Enough to lead people into thinking that he has no problem with his emotions. At least, long enough to willingly, or unwillingly, insult them. Even then, having any abuse thrown back at him would not be enough to change the way he holds himself.
Much like the rest of him, Sai's attire is monochromatic. Nearly all of his usual outfit in black in colour. The trousers he wears are of three quarter length and at a somewhat lower cut than most, his typical ninja sandals are black, as are his gloves, which, unlike other pairs of gloves, have the thumb and forefinger of each hand cut into the 'fingerless' style. This is to enable him with a better grip of his brush while he draws. However, the most notable aspect of Sai's outfit would be the shirt he wears. Black again, the shirt is very short, resembling an item of clothing more likely to be found on a woman. It's held closed with a zip and reveals everything from the chest bone down, including his belly button.
Usually seen carried on his back is a small sword. The only other 'weapon' he'll be seen with are his scrolls and paintbrushes. These are required for him to work his Ninjutsu attacks and are stored away in a red pack he wears on his back. Being quite practical, anything else that he may need day to day, such as medicine, kunai or even one of his 'self-help' books can be found in a kunai pouch attached to his leg.

Personality:
Shortly put, Sai has little personality to speak of. Or at least, he was never allowed such a thing. Due to his involvement in an underground group of the "Leaf Village" organisation, ANBU Root, he was conditioned from a young age not to show any emotions. Having subdued the feelings that a normal human would feel, such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, Sai was robbed of all the basic components of personality. As he grew up, he began to forget any emotions he once felt, and as such only became confused when someone talked of or expressed such feelings. With that in mind, Sai is still more than a brainless drone. Even though the children selected for Root were raised in this way, he knows when someone means to hurt him, at least. Although, any offensive comments or actions towards him usually bounce off, either thanks to his lack of emotional knowledge, or his skill in a battle.
Sai will follow orders without question. Once orders have been issued to him, he is faithful to the cause and will do what is in his power to do to complete his tasks. This, too, is just another fragment of his life from inside Root. However, this is through no loyalty to one person or another, as he was taught to live feeling nothing for anybody, as bonds weakened their ability to successfully complete missions.
Although, in recent times, after breaking away from Root, Sai has been looking into exploring the emotions he has been denied up until now. As of yet, he has merely read books about the human psyche and tried to understand why people feel the way they do. However, he has not had many people to test the starting point of his new personality on. As such, when he speaks or smiles he still reveals nothing of any actual, real emotion. His tone suggests humour, whether saying something that can be seen as complimentary, or something hugely offensive. As yet, he fails to see the difference between his act and the real thing, wondering only when people get angry with him what he did wrong.

Abilities/Weapons:
It should be mentioned that Sai is a very talented artist. He has drawn hundreds, maybe thousands of pictures, even though he has named none. It's this gift that he uses for his advantage while using his Ninjutsu.
Sai's foremost technique is his Choujuu Giga, or Super Beast Imitation Drawing jutsu. After drawing on one of his large scrolls, Sai can make a certain hand seal, charging his drawings with Chakra, bringing them to life. These drawings obey his will, and can be used for any purpose. From large lions for offensive maneuvers, giant birds for transportation, a clone of himself, or even day to day objects, like umbrellas.
Sai also has a very good memory for faces, meaning that as well an animals and inanimate objects, he can make clones of those he knows.
This technique stands as a foundation for many others. When drawing a weapon, infusing it with Chakra and performing the correct hand seal, Sai can too bring this to life. Of course, instead of it moving for itself, it simply becomes the real thing. As well as infusing his ink with Chakra, he has created his own kind of explosive ink that activates with the use of a hand seal. He tends to draw small animals such as mice or snakes for this jutsu. Once they are drawn, and come to life, Sai can control when it is they explode. Of course, this attack is good for defense as well as offense, as the range from which the attack takes place can be vary much varied.
Like most other Ninja in the "Leaf Village" area, Sai is also highly trained in hand-to-hand combat, including the use of kunai. Should he find himself without any of his artist supplies, he is skilled enough to remain in the fight. His favourite attack for these situations makes use of the short sword he carries on his back. When his opponent is close enough, in one swift movement, he both unsheathes the sword and cuts one of their tendons. Usually somewhere vital, in the arm, leg or even neck. Once the opponent's tendon is rendered useless, he takes the chance to attack, in an X-shaped cut.

How well can your character hack?:
At a Medium difficulty. He's spent a large part of his life on espionage missions, so learning how to hack was sometimes a useful skill. Depending on how likely he is to hack, he could get better.

Weaknesses:
Sai's most obvious weakness is his inability to experience emotions. Not only has it distanced him from team members in the past, but people outside of his former organisation in general tend to find him untrustworthy. This is most likely due to his false, overly friendly facade. However, even when he reverts to his typical, emotionless expression, most aren't convinced of his loyalty. This is the main reason for his wanting to change. He hopes to better his bonds with others so he may be more easily accepted in the future, allowing him to learn more about himself, through others.
Due to the type of his preferred Ninjutsu, it's very important that he has a steady supply of ink. If, for whatever reason, he is without ink in any battle situation, he will then have to rely on his taijutsu. His hand-to-hand skill is by no means amateur, it was just another part of his Root training, but crew mates/team members will lose a valuable asset if he were to run out of ink.
During his time in Root, he was trained to be nothing but an emotionless killing machine. Even though he's trying to change, certain aspects remaining from his training may seem a weakness to others. For instance, he was taught to complete a mission, whatever the cost, up to and including sacrificing the life of a team mate. Should the situation ever arrive, Sai will automatically take the route that best guarantees success. As mentioned, some people may have a big objections to this, given the risks involved. Finding it hard to form friendships, he is less likely to run to help, unless told to do so.

History:
Sai was abandoned in Melior at a very young age. Never even really knowing his parents, he was found close to death by Danzo, the founder of a branch group of the "Leaf Village". It was quite some time before Sai had been nursed back to full health, but over that time it became apparent that the youth had quite the artistic talent. Danzo allowed the talent to grow, seeing potential for unique forms of Ninjutsu. With time, the boy came to learn that the group was named 'Root', and that their leader was giving him the opportunity to grow strong and use his talents for the good of the country. It was then that he was given the name "Sai", which he embraced, already forgetting that he ever had a birth name.
His name was not the only thing he learned to forget. Root specialises in training youths to forget their emotions. Sai was taught that emotions only hold you back against your enemies, that they only cause grief and pain. As such, the children of Root were raised to become highly-trained, existing only to successfully complete the missions given to them. In other words, to kill, without question, for their employers.
Although there was little to no camaraderie within the organisation, Sai still managed to befriend one of his fellow members, before he lost the knowledge of friendship altogether. Known as Shin, this boy became very close to Sai. Their friendship even extending to the point that they referred to each other as 'brother'. Sai's brother taught him many things, how to appreciate life even in their position. Shin was the only thing in Sai's life to prevent him from falling completely into an emotionless machine. To honor their friendship, Sai, his artistic talents blossoming, created an art book, split into two halves. One side showed his journey through life, and all of the opponents he faced. The other side showed Shin's story. Up until today, the two middle pages remain blank. However, the friendship was not to last. Only a handful of years after their first meeting, Shin sadly passed away due to illness, leaving Sai to forget about the story before he could finish it. Without his brother, he allowed himself to finally rid himself of any emotions, doing exactly what Root wanted of him, and even forgot what it was that he meant to draw on those last two pages.
Over the following years, as his skills grew more advanced, Sai was sent on increasingly more difficult missions. Danzo, seeing Sai become a prodigy amongst Root, sent him on various espionage missions, often into the "Leaf Village" itself. It was during these missions that he was sent as an elite agent to fill in for missing members of squads, a mission inside a mission, as it were. His main role was to report back to Danzo with any information about Ninja that could potentially become a problem for the country. However, Danzo's plan seemed to backfire, as Sai became interested with some of the groups he was sent off with. Unlike Root, they put themselves into the line of fire for their team members. They covered for each other, even outside the strategies they'd set up. It didn't make sense to him, it seemed to him like they were merely jeopardising the mission to watch out for each other. Yet, he was still interested. He wanted to know more. Why sacrifice yourself for somebody else? They spoke so much of bonds...
One day, Sai simply went missing. He failed to report back to Danzo after a mission outside of the usual confines. As far as he knew, he had never run away before, and very deep down there was some hidden sense of satisfaction. He knew that one day somebody would catch up to him and that he may have to pay the ultimate price for his betrayal. For now, he was making his way towards the badlands. He'd heard of an air ship race happening there, and he thought of all the things he could draw.

Also, if you'd like to say anything about my playing of Sai, good or bad, please drop me a comment at this post. Thanks!
