Joel would come home; smelling of sex and cigarettes, things Benji would only connect with Tony. His eyes were blood shot and his clothes still undone, something else Benji only associated with late nights, Tony, and lots of beer, before then.

But Benji was a good brother, and he would help Joel to the bathroom and turn on the water in the shower with only a slight sigh of ‘what the fuck are you on?’ when he would see the clock glowing 3am. Joel would just laugh as if it was only a joke.

When the tours started Joel would slip out of bed once he was sure Benji was sleeping; once the slight snores were heard that assured him Benji wouldn’t wake up when the bus door closed, and he would run; run to the Mest bus, that was never more then a few feet away, and knock on Tony’s window. And when they stumbled into practice 2 hours late, Joel’s pants still undone - Tony’s eyes still red, Jeremiah would laugh ‘Get off the crack man.’ Tony would smile. Joel would look down. Benji would shoot Jere a death glare.

When Joel’s hands shook Paul would whisper ‘stoner’ in that never serious tone. And Benji pushed him playfully but the look in his eyes said it all to well… ‘Back off’

Joel looked at Billy like he was crazy when he said happy birthday, having forgot the date, and Billy laughed ‘I think you need off the drugs man.’ Benji quickly jumped in about how Joel hadn’t slept. But Joel saw him shake his head as he walked away.

When cover up no longer hid the dark rings under Joel’s eyes and the fans muttered ‘crack head’ you could see Benji’s fists curl.

Forgetting they had a meet and greet and someone whispered druggie. Benji immediately turned, set on teaching them a lesson.

Joel would sit wiping his nose, and sniffling every few seconds. And Chris joked 'it's the crack man' and soon felt Benji's fist on his jaw

Jumping when the doors opened, looking over his shoulder. Matt would laugh, ‘your dealer coming after you?’ and Benji would trip him as he walked by.

Keeping the lights down low, his dilated pupils not able to take it, and you would see someone shake there head as Joel’s whole body shook in the darkness, and Benji just brought him a blanket.

When the lights of the stage shown down and all eyes were on Joel’s red ones, as black circles shown of pale skin, Joel searched the crowd for lyrics he couldn’t remember. He couldn’t tell you the name of the song, let alone the next words. Joel couldn’t tell you much anymore; anything you asked him confused him, and anything he understood he didn’t know. He would look to Billy, but Billy looked away, and his eyes would plead with Benji’s and Benji would mouth the next line.

Benji was a good brother. Benji held Joel while Joel shook at night. Benji would fix his clothes and leave him notes to remind him of everything from the date to the city they were in.

Benji was a good brother. Benji covered for Joel while Joel was in the back room, trading with Tony-powder for orgasms.

Benji was a good brother. Benji would lie back on the bed as Joel fumbled with his pants and boxers, pretending he didn’t notice the whimpers of Tony’s name.

Benji was a good brother. Benji let Joel have them both.

Benji was a good brother. But when Benji walked by and heard Billy talking, ‘The sniffling, red eyes, dilated pupils, forgetting everything, if I didn’t know any better I would call him a fucking druggie.’ Benji’s fists didn’t curl, and his eyes didn’t narrow. Benji sighed and packed up his guitar. No line about lack of sleep, or stress could help him now.

Joel was a good brother. Because when Benji pushed him against the hallway wall, still sweating from stage lights; When Benji bit his lip and swallowed, ‘What the fuck are you on man.’ Joel looked down, then up, into the eyes he’d been avoiding and whispered back ‘Cocaine.’
