note(s): another part in the david&david family series. this would be between let's make more memories & everyday issues.

“Oh my gosh, Grayson! Would you please stop pulling at the lights on the tree? It is going to end up falling down on you!” David cries as he runs from fuddling with the camera stand, and over to his two-year-old son, who is currently pulling at the lights on the Christmas tree. Without warning, David scoops up the child, who pouts at the fact that his little hands are now out of reach of the pretty lights.

“Cook!” David cries, looking up the stairs, “Are you almost done up there?” As if on cue, Cook appears from Athena’s bedroom, Athena on his hip, and dressed in her red and white little Christmas dress.

“We’re done, we’re done. Are you okay down there?” Cook asks walking down the steps dressed in a red dress shirt, and dress pants, his hair fixed neatly - or as neatly as he can get it - upon his head.

David lets out a heavy sigh, adjusting Grayson - who is wearing his own matching red shirt and pants, just like Cook (they tried green, but apparently, he wanted to look just like papa) - upon his hip. “Well, I’m trying to get the camera ready, and Grayson has decided that pulling the lights is a fun way to pass the time,” David remarks, and Cook smiles just a little bit before hitting the bottom the stairs.

“Here, you take Athena, and I’ll fix the camera. You know that if you try, you might just beak it,” Cook tells him, handing over Athena, and David tries to look offended by this, but he really can’t since what Cook said was kind of true - he always did have problems with technology.

David places Athena on his other hip, and turns to watch Cook as he moves over to the camera stand and finishes fixing it before getting the camera on top of it. He bounces both children a little bit as he watches Cook get the camera hooked on the stand, and begins fuddling around with the time setting. It is another few moments before Cook is finished, and he turns back to David.

“Okay, it’s already. Now, we just have to get us ready, which is easier said then done,” his voice is a mumble by the time the sentence as ended, and David has to agree. Handing Grayson over to Cook, David moves over to stand at the Christmas tree. David, as the best he can with Athena in his arms, fixes his own white shirt before putting Athena in front of him, holding her bottom and resting her against his chest. Cook looks over at David. “Ready?” he asks, and David nods his head before Cook presses the button and quickly moves back over to stand next to David. He adjusts Grayson on his hip so that Grayson is looking at the camera. “Smile everybody!” he tells them - more for the children’s benefit - and David tells Athena to look at the camera just before the flash is going off.

And, David is pretty sure that this shot didn’t turn out. Even though Cook said smile, and David had pointed to the camera, Athena didn’t look at the camera. She was too distracted by the lights, and so was Grayson, who was trying to grab them from behind. David lets out a heavy sigh, and looks at Cook. It is going to be a long morning.

“You know,” David begins after the tenth picture that hasn’t turned out right - though, this time, it was David’s fault since he was trying to adjust Athena as the flash went off - “I think we should have just went and got this done professionally.”

“What is the fun in that?” Cook replies, and David gives him a glare, which totally doesn’t look like one, and Cook just chuckles. “Come on, babe. We’ll get it this time. We have the lights helping us.”

Cook had decided since the kids were being distracted by the lights behind them, that maybe if they put some lights on the camera, they would pay attention to them. David hopes this idea works out (Athena is getting heavier by the minute).

David stops glaring - or looking, or whatever at Cook, and resettles Athena against his body, and Cook fixes Grayson against his own. “Okay, Grayson, can you look at the camera?” Cook asks, and Grayson looks at him, and nods. “Athena?” he turns to the little baby, who just looks back at him, and must take that as a silent yes.

“Alright, smile!” Cook cries, and they stand as still as possible, and the flash goes off.

“Oh please let this look good,” David mumbles to himself as he places Athena back on his hip.

Both go over to the camera and flip it to picture mode, and look at the picture that has come out of it. Surprisingly, the lights worked - both kids are looking at the camera, and sure, they aren’t smiling brightly, and as happy as they would be on another occasion, but they don’t look sad, or are pouting. They just look, well, happy. All of them, look happy, and they look like a family - like the perfect family.

“Perfect,” David whispers, and looks up at Cook, who is smiling back down at him.

“Perfect,” Cook repeats before leaning down and pressing a soft kiss to David’s lips.

Yes, they are perfect - so very, very perfect.
