The 20th Annual Critics Choice Awards
Held January 15, 2015, at the Hollywood Palladium. Hosted by Michael Strahan.
I always look forward to the Critics' Choice Awards, because they have a Best Young Actor/Actress category. Some years (like
2011), this category is dominated by girls, but this year, it was mostly made up of boys. There were five young actor nominees (Ansel Elgort for The Fault in Our Stars, Jaeden Lieberher for St. Vincent, Tony Revolori for
The Grand Budapest Hotel, Noah Wiseman for The Babadook, and Ellar Coltrane, who won for
Boyhood) and two young actresses.
Quvenzhane Wallis, 11, was nominated for
Annie. Ricky Gervais mispronounced her name at the
Golden Globes earlier this week, but here, host Michael Strahan mentioned her by name in his opening monologue, saying, "Quvenzhane Wallis from Annie's here, everybody. There is no joke. I'm just glad I could say your name and get it right. You're an amazing young lady, so I'm glad you're here."
Mackenzie Foy, 14, was nominated for
Interstellar. This year, the award was presented by Vera Farmiga, who costarred with Mackenzie in
The Conjuring, and her Bates Motel son, Freddie Highmore (
The Spiderwick Chronicles), now 22. Freddie has won the award twice, for Finding Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Although Mackenzie lost out on Best Young Actor/Actress, she got to take the stage with producer Lynda Obst and others when Interstellar won for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie.
