[Awards Season 2017] The Oscars!
The 89th Annual Academy Awards
Held February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
Saniyya Sidne might have been one of the youngest people at the Oscars this year, but she had two movies there, more than most of the adult actors! Fences (where Saniyya played Best Actor nominee Denzel Washington's daughter) had a total of 4 nominations, and Hidden Figures (where she played Taraji P. Henson's daughter) had a total of 3, including Best Picture nods for both. Saniyya, posing with her Fences costars above, wore a silver tutu-style dress with ballet flats.
Auli'i Cravalho, 16, performed "How Far I'll Go" from her Disney film Moana, which was nominated for Best Original Song but lost to "City of Stars" from La La Land. Performing at the Oscars at age 16 is impressive enough by itself, but Auli'i really blew us away when she didn't even falter after one of her backup performers bonked her in the head with a flagpole while she was singing. She said the next day: "We all congregated together afterwards and it was, 'OK, someone hit me on the head.' [laughs] Like, 'Super sorry, but it will never happen again.'"
Hailee Steinfeld, 20, and Gael Garcia Bernal presented the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film to Zootopia. Hailee wore a sheer pink floral gown with a ruffled neckline and long train.
Emma Roberts, 26, usually shows up at the Oscar after-parties, but this year, she went to the ceremony, too. She wore a two-toned dress with a black bodice and cream tiered skirt, which dated from a 2005 Armani collection; Emma chose a 12-year-old dress to support "sustainable fashion."
Emma Stone, 28, was one of the big winners of the night, taking home Best Actress for La La Land, which had a record-tying 14 nominations and 6 wins. (It was incorrectly announced as the Best Picture winner, which actually went to Moonlight.) It was recently revealed that another Emma, Emma Watson, 26, was originally set to star in La La Land but dropped out to do Beauty and Beast (due out on March 17!). Another former young actress, Natalie Portman, 35, was also nominated for Best Actress for Jackie, but she was too pregnant to attend the show.
Scarlett Johansson, 32, presented the Oscar for Best Original Song to "City of Stars" from La La Land. (She was one of the singers of 2013 Best Original Song nominee "Before My Time" from Chasing Ice.) Scarlett wore a revealing, belted pink-and-silver gown.
Kirsten Dunst, 34, attended to support her film Hidden Figures. Kirsten wore a strapless black gown with a wasp waist and long train.
