The 2016 Grammys. Also, thoughts on Selena vs. Miley.

A few former young actresses attended the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, held last Monday, February 15, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Selena Gomez, 23, introduced Andra Day and Ellie Goulding. As she did at the Video Music Awards last September, she attended the show arm-in-arm with Taylor Swift (who had seven total nominations), to the extent that it was hard to find a photo of Selena by herself. Sometimes I wonder if Selena is still trying to make a music career of her own, or if she just wants to be famous for being Taylor's BFF.

{Onstage after a wardrobe change.} Like Miley Cyrus, also 23, Selena is a graduate of the Disney Channel. I wouldn't call myself a Miley fan, but I do appreciate her honesty in admitting that she wants to get people's attention. Her performance at the 2013 Video Music Awards (you know the one: the teddy bears, the twerking) was panned as an embarrassing trainwreck, but it also got everyone talking, and Miley responded with, "My whole thing is, haters are gonna hate, but haters are also going to click on your YouTube video to watch it. So I don't really care. You help me break the record, even if you were watching just to hate on me. So I win." And after she hosted last year's VMAs nearly topless, she said, "If you get your tits out, and they are all looking, then you can use that space to say something and get them to listen."

This is what I like about Miley: she admits that she does shallow, stupid stuff in order to accomplish something more meaningful. Selena thinks that the shallow stuff is meaningful: when she posed nude on the cover of her 2015 album Revival (above), she claimed that she did it to stand up to body-shamers and bullies. It was such a weak attempt to give substance to shallow shock value.

Anyway, a few other ladies who were at the Grammys this year...

Zendaya, 19, wore a suit and mullet obviously inspired by the recently-deceased David Bowie.

Ariana Grande, 22, introduced The Weekend.

Demi Lovato, 23, performed onstage as part of the Lionel Richie tribute.
