Великое землетрясение Хансин, широко известное за пределами Японии как землетрясение в Кобе, произошло 17 января 1995 года, принеся 6 434 погибших, 25 000 раненых, 300 000 беженцев, в основном в Кобе, был нанесен огромный материальный ущерб.
J-Friends (хор японских детей), популярный среди японских подростков, организовал благотворительный проект для выживших детей - жертв Великого землетрясения Хансин. В период 1997-2003 J-Friends записывали музыку и дали несколько живых концертов.
Майкл Джексон предложил работать с J-Friends для того, чтобы ободрить японскую молодежь. Он написал и спродюсировал песни "Люди Мира" и "Детский праздник" - благотворительные гимны, изданные в качестве синглов, первый из них немедленно достиг в Японии первого места. Говорят, что певцы слушали демо Майкла перед записью. К сожалению, версии Майкла до сегодняшнего дня остаются неизданными. Майклу приписывают все: начиная от написания музыки и текстов песен до программирования клавишных и аранжировки вокала.
Все вырученные средства от продажи синглов были пожертвованы в фонд помощи жертвам и их семьям.
