The daily grind

Fun facts:

- the most dangerous thing to my life/health in this country is the carpet in our hallway.  I trip and go flying 2-3 times a week.  One of these times I'm really gonna eat it and hurt myself.

- my package arrived from momma!  yay momma!  but it's at the post office and now I have to pick it up and possibly pay taxes...

- I had one of my students tell me that the blue hand/evil eye earrings I was wearing today are inappropriate for Muslims to wear, because they're superstitious.  super.

- my students were fasting today, and I ate a falafel sandwich in front of them, that they insisted on paying for.  super.

- two of my lessons flopped today.  super.  they day was just fine despite this.

- construction started at 7am this morning again - though this time without the sledgehammering above my room.

My students are great, but i still haven't figured them out.  I would imagine that they're saying the same of me.  I always knew my pedigological approach was probably way different, with games, and sitting while they talk, etc., but I found out today that most professors won't talk to their students outside of class time.  In simply walking across campus talking to my students, I'm breaking a rule they've always followed.  That's why everyone who stops into my office is like a deer in the headlights.  Some professors tell students to go away and not bother them.

Hanedi came to my office today to talk and shared this.  She's great, but she's so nervous about speaking English that she speaks at top speed and interrupts both you and herself.  It's a little stressful to talk to her.  Despite all that, she was really flattering (I hope she meant all the compliments about my teaching) and told me her memories of the first activities we did.  It reminded me that although the students say they want to x, y, and z.... sometimes they don't know that that's not the truth.  They want to laugh and have fun.  It's just hard to get them out of their shells.
